Went to an ISU FB game at Morgantown and told the locals we were headed to the Shenandoah Valley for a week after the game. Asked what was the best highways to take and they were unanimously aghast that we were headed east over the mountains. None had ever been to Virginia. West Va is an interesting place, hard to get there and not a straight road in the state.I would 2nd West Virginia, great place to take in an ISU game. Hard to fly into, have to go to Pittsburgh and then drive down or car pool it out like we did, but its not a bad one day drive. Early fall game when the trees are turning its something to see. Fans were great to tailgate with, could not believe we had driven from Iowa, the way they talked it might has well been the west coast.
Shenandoah Valley is another wonderful drive to take in fall, but really anytime of the year, much like upstate New York from NY City to Montreal. Both are just wonderful places to visit and really do nothing.Went to an ISU FB game at Morgantown and told the locals we were headed to the Shenandoah Valley for a week after the game. Dude Ames absolutely blows compared to Lawrence,KS. Its not even close. And Boulder would be a cool place even if it was on the plains.Never understood this type of thinking, Ames is a college town, much like Stillwater, Lubbock, Manhattan, Lawrence, and Waco, further north so it colder. If you want outside beauty none are going to compare to Colorado, Utah or Arizona, but neither is Iowa City, Bloomington, and many cities in the Big 10.
Unless you have natural scenery to look at or are close to a large cities, most college towns are what they are, not much better or worse than any other.
What makes Lawerence KS cool and hip, and so much better than Ames. What I know about Lawerence is driving through it on our way to Dallas, so only from the turnpike. Boulder sets at the foot of the mountains, that is why it's the way it is, Location, Location, Location.Dude Ames absolutely blows compared to Lawrence,KS. Its not even close. Dude, I've been to Lawrence many times. It's a nice college town, but nothing special.Dude Ames absolutely blows compared to Lawrence,KS. Its not even close. And Boulder would be a cool place even if it was on the plains.
Great college town. I'd much rather live in greater KCDude, I've been to Lawrence many times. It's a nice college town, but nothing special.
Went out to the Colorado game, and multiple fans I talked with said Colorado students just pregame in their dorms before the games.Outside of the mountains, which are incredible, Boulder itself is wildly overrated.
My wife and I went out there on a Saturday night a few years ago, and at 35 we were the youngest people out. Every bartender said the college kids just got stoned in their dorms
A nice flight to Pittsburgh , and an easy drive to Morgantown. Get lucky and catch a Steelers game on Sunday !He hates coming to Ames because it’s cold. What got me is that he loves Morgantown but he doesn’t like Lubbock and Stillwater because it’s hard to get there. Morgantown is hard to get to as well though it is much more scenic.
Be happy you can leave. I had to live there for 5 years, it was miserable, same time as Bobby Knight came to town. Nothing to do, nowhere to go, no scenery, no points of interest. And in the spring, you get the legendary red dust squalls coming in from the west. Let me tell you, that dust gets into EVERYTHING. I couldn't wait to leave that awful place, and have (literally) never been back.I'm currently in Lubbock for my son's graduation and I hope it's the last time I come here.
The other night it basically rained mud. And it's been hotter than Satan's butthole. It's 97° at almost 7pm.
Lawrence is not great at all.Great college town. I'd much rather live in greater KC
Nothing. Deadeyededric just hates Ames, Iowa State, and Iowa. What makes Lawerence KS cool and hip, and so much better than Ames. Probably twenty years ago, we drove (from Iowa) to Washington, DC for Spring Break. I like to drive a different route home when possible and we planned to spend the night in Morgantown on the return trip. We pulled up in front of the Morgantown Holiday Inn at 3pm, leaving plenty of time to explore town & campus. My wife and three kids didn't like the look of things and voted to keep driving, so I've passed thru Morgantown but that's the extent of it...Been to Morgantown once. Pretty hills surrounding the area. That is the most piece of s*** beat up town with deferred maintenance in every building that I've ever seen.
If there's one place in the Big 12 that's definitely both warm and easy to get to, it's Manhattan, Kansas.
Manhattan Regional is not a large airport though and I'd imagine most people who are from out of town are flying into KC and making the 2 hour drive to Manhattan. To be fair it at least has an airport in town. That plays a lot into the mind of those in a travel party. Also location of hotel and what is around it that you can easily get to.
