Cytown Update

Maybe everybody already knew this, but ISU Athletics nets $1 million per stadium concert.
Good article as well. The 'stadium district' concept won't work at every university, particularly those in high density areas such as Minnesota and Iowa. But I think the concept is a very sound idea and I for one am excited to see CyTown come to fruition

I actually think a similar concept in that parking lot north of Kinnick would do well too, especially with the hospital right there for daily customers at restaurants and shops.

We may have been "first" to commit to a project like this, but others may pass us in actual completion of their projects.

I feel it may work better in an urban environment though. Sure it would have competition but if you designed it correctly and offered the right entertainment options I think it would quickly become a place to go. My only concern with CyTown is wondering how much traffic (non-event days) it will draw because it will be a drive-to destination. I am not saying it won't work...just suggesting my concern is that it is a cool location for we Cyclone fans...other than that (like most business centers) what matters most is the business located within the footprint. Otherwise, once I am in my car...I can go anywhere that I have a craving for...

Thats pretty much true for most restaurant's in Ames. Very busy on event days, but any other time they are drive-to destination. Most of them aren't a short walk from the corner of campus and don't have a medical clinic right by them.

Yeah...pretty much the case for most suburban communities I guess. So...to make it stand out...it really does come down to the experience it offers as well as the conveniences. If those two things aren't up to snuff...I guess it will rely on its cool location (which it is a cool location)!

A cafe and/or coffee shop at the north end near the Cyride stop would make a killing. If said cafe had good enough options, staff and students from campus could even make a lunch trip out there, since that route is so frequent.

I can't find a modern streetview image now that the commuter station is in the NE part of the parking lot, but this is quite similar to the volume of cars there during a regular school day.

The most recent drawing (Dec. 2025) has the CyRide stop moving from D3 (NE, near Hilton) to smack in the middle of the CyTown layout. A Hy-Vee Fast and Fresh (or similar convenience/grab-and-go) and a coffee shop in Buildings D/F would absolutely rake.

I still think they missed a golden housing opportunity. They needed to provide lower priced condos or apartments for full-time residents to frequent establishments on the main floors of buildings.
