Completely agree with you, but a LOT of people were in denial that he would leave.Portrayed him as what? I feel like most figured at some point he was going to leave. If it wasn't obvious after USC you weren't paying attention.

Best these days to just assume after every season that any of your coaches or players might leave, and just be happy with the ones who stay. There is NO loyalty anymore. Not sure if there ever was, but now there definitely isn’t. Don’t buy any current players jerseys for your kids, etc. They might be gone the next year.
I'm shocked how many people didn't see the nuance or understand coachspeak. Iowa State fans are a gullible bunch.I think a lot of people (myself included) thought Matt wanted to build a Bill Snyder of Kirk Ferentz esq program that he stayed at for life. He constantly said you are either building something or being someone. Turns out a lot of it was smoke and he was always open to other opportunities and more or less looking to leave every year. Thankful for our best 10 year run, but he really wasn't any different than any other coach out there. He doesn't owe us anything, but I am done trusting anything a coach says ever again.
He and i had a dumbing war at one point. i actually thoroughly enjoyed it, until i realized that i cant compete with him, as i have a job and a lifeStraight up Macloney behavior. I used to think he’d leave after all those seniors graduated from Iowa State but in hindsight it’s clear to me those players were part of the ‘package’ Penn State was buying. Part of the conversation had to be Campbell detailing which guys he could bring to PSU to help win right away without rebuilding.Campbell got the ISU job at a very young age for a head coach, he had plenty of time to build ISU up and then take a higher profile job compared to someone like Snyder or even Freerents when they took jobs at KSU and EIU, later in their lives.
I don't blame Campbell for taking the PSU job, but I do blame him for gutting the ISU program as he went out the door. He talked a lot about family and devotion, then turned around and took the best ISU had with him to Penn State. He could have very easily told the players that they should stay and continue what they had built, and said that he was not going to offer any of them the chance to go with him to Penn State.

I believe Matt Campbell loved Iowa State and relished the opportunity to build a program from the ground. I also believe Matt Campbell wants to win at the highest level and was always going to be open to the right opportunity.

To be fair, the whole dumb emoji makes CF quite a bit more toxic than it needs to be. There are a few people who only use the dumb emoji and rarely post about anything. It's childish, imo.Straight up Macloney behavior. Agree. But the expectation is that Campbell wins the NC with these unlimited resources. Tall order for a program who hasn’t won it in over 40 years.I figured Campbell would leave for a better job when I would see him losing his s*** on officials in big games. It was obvious ISU didn’t have the same talent as some teams but they were coached well and he loved his guys. It just seemed like the margin of error was so small that even one questionable call in a game was enough to spell the difference for Iowa State and Campbell knew it.
Being in a place with unlimited resources like PSU makes that margin so much bigger for Campbell.
Yes. At Indiana, Illinois and Oregon. Michigan and Washington at home. Will they have a tougher schedule in 2027? They have to, right? That will be the true test.

One of the best parts of the Campbell tenure was watching us go toe-to-toe with the big dogs like OU and Texas, and occasionally beating them. He’ll beat some of the better B10 teams. Will they have a tougher schedule in 2027? They have to, right? That will be the true test.
