TJ signs 10 year extension

Regarding a buyout, its pretty moot. If TJ wants to leave, whatever school he is going to go to is going to pay it whether its a $2M buyout or a $20M buyout. Also, I'd almost guarantee that if TJ went to UNC this year, his average salary would have been at least $7M, if not $8M. So maybe Pollard could have raised the buyout and the salary, but overall its a push. Neither effort would make it more likely for TJ to stay, or would it mean Iowa State would have more money in the bank if he left.

Additionally, if TJ leaves in the next 2-3 years, it would have nothing to do with salary our buyout. It will 100% be because of something fundamentally unsolvable at Iowa State that makes it not possible for TJ to compete for championships.
Importance of buyout at ISU isn’t to prevent TJ from leaving. It’s to compensate the school for the coach leaving. When Campbell left, his tiny buyout did nothing really to cover the bowl fine, pay a buyout for the next coach, and pay expenses of those leaving. CMC had a ton of deferred revenue that got paid out beyond his salary.

@clone52 is right. On one hand, the buyout may be closer to $2 million than $20 million. On the other, all coaches care about now is if their program can afford championship-level rosters. (Yes, they still want a few million in salary, but that’s been true for decades.) Otz has demonstrated that he thinks he has what he needs to win, and will for the foreseeable future

I don't think Pollard has any concerns about TJ leaving.

Since Otz is making double the base pay of Rogers, does that mean we are officially a basketball school?
I was talking to some buddies about this. How many other P4 schools in the country have a basketball coach making twice what the football coach makes? Maybe like a Duke or KU? Can't be many. Obviously TJ deserves this but I wonder if we could have done this if Matt Campbell didn't leave.

I'm super happy we are making this commitment and investment in basketball. We need a healthy football program but the odds we'll every compete for a national title are near nil. We can do that in basketball.

Jump in Pollard haters!

As long as when he makes a mistake/faux pas, anyone blindly supporting him jumps in criticizing him.

I don’t dislike Pollard, but to anyone who would make it seem like he doesn’t have faults/blind spots, is ignorant.

All in all, this is a good thing for the athletics department. And hopefully, it plays out better than the last 10 year contract he handed out.

UConn is probably the only one with a bigger difference. Duke and Arizona are a little less than double.

Agree. I believe both Campbell's and TJ's buyouts were lowered in their most recent extensions. I attributed it to both negotiations getting bogged down in legal with how to guarantee they stay competitive in NIL in a contract. My guess is the compromise was to lower the buyout, making it easier for either to leave if they felt they couldn't compete.

Campbell left obviously, but I think TJ leaving is far less likely. Campbell left to move closer to his roots, to a borderline blue blood in a sport where roster budget is far more important and the biggest, strongest fastest players almost always win. TJ is from close to here, his wife is more from here than anywhere else in this hemisphere and a MBB roster is far more affordable.

Any ISU fan who is being realistic understands we've been a basketball school for a long time. We need to have a healthy football program, and we have a great atmosphere, and had a hell of a run in the Campbell era.

Men's basketball is the program that has the highest national profile, highest level of success this century, is most consistently well attended, and the lowest tolerance for bad performances.

I don’t either. But it’s his fiduciary responsibility to protect ISU as best he can. You never say never.
That's fine, but you have to get TJ to agree to the buyout. "Hey I know you've told me over and over that you aren't going anywhere, and you've passed up some of the biggest jobs in the country to stay, but I don't trust you, so we added a $10M buyout to the contract, is that ok?"
