Brent Metcalf Head Coach?

This thread is bizzare. Are people seriously comparing the coaching pedigrees of Drake Ayala and David Taylor? First, DT had been running camps and clubs for years. He did have coaching experience. Second, DT is an all-timer, Ayala regressed every year.

I was a Gilman hater for a long time, but by all accounts, he's seen the light. Give me a world medalist over a low level AA that just came out of the T&T camp any day.
Low level AA ? Two time finalist

I had heard around State wrestling tournament time that when the Ft. Dodge coach retired that Drake was headed back to the dirty to take over that program. Would be quite the promotion with out ever having to coach! Lol

Don’t they already hire a guy?

I feel like Gilman is obviously the higher level wrestler with more coaching experience, seems like a significantly better option. Ayala would strike me as a bizarre hire, unless I’m missing something that he brings to the table as far as recruiting goes. The practice partner thing seems like kind of a wash.

The argument of Gilman>Ayala (and obviously Taylor>Ayala) is completely valid, but "low level AA" isn't really accurate. Ayala's a 2x NCAA finalist who got 5th this year behind four generationally talented freshmen. He hasn't lost to anybody but All-Americans since his true freshman season.

Gilman is the more seasoned candidate for sure. But also, would demand much more in terms of salary and authority. Our second assistant is an entry level position.

This is fair. Part of this is just ignorance on my part, like what is the role and responsibilities of a second assistant? Are we literally just hiring a practice partner? Are they going to help with recruiting? Just unclear to me.

Wrong. DT was picked to run one of the biggest and most prestigious wrestling “organizations” in the world. Drake would be a 2nd assistant coach mostly tasked with working out with guys, helping make small improvements, managing weight cuts, breaking down a little film, camps, and recruiting. All things a young and inexperienced coach needs to learn. Drake has also been traveling the country and the world wrestling and going with Spencer as a workout partner overseas. He’s not an amateur
