I've had one for about 8 months now and was surprised how easy it was to get given how strict the laws are. I mean I got it and was able to buy at a dispensary in like 4 days.

i'm surprised it took 4 days
Go to this website and you'll have a prescription within a few hours. Send your prescription online to the state and in 4 days you'll have one. I didn't even actually talk to the Dr. I just filled out a form and then got an email saying my prescription was ready. Couldn't believe how easy it was. Do the telehealth option.
You could probably still get a prescription tonight if you wanted.

I had one years ago. I don’t remember it taking that long to get. More like 48 hours or less. They must have tightened up the rules.

Why do you need a med card?
Because it is a legal requirement in the state of Iowa to obtain marijuana legally?

You do realize recreational marijuana (crazy in 2026, I know) is still illegal in Iowa...

Our neighbors in Minnesota, Missouri, & and Illinois, of course, don't need a med card to purchase since recreational is legal there.

Sorry I just meant why not just get Hemp THC?
I realize it’s not the exact same but I thought close enough
Can you get herb with a med card?

That's a reasonable question. I know some people who don't feel the effects as well with hemp-derived. One friend even claimed the hemp derived drinks gave him a slight headache. I'm sure it varies in how people feel it.

It is somewhat personal preference, which feeling you like best. I find hemp derived drinks to be alright, I enjoy them. I always preferred THC gummies & edibles over smoking. But smoking flower back in the day was kind of the only readily available thing.

Sorry*** edit, my friend only gets vapes with his med card. Apparently no flower/prerolls yet

THC is not the only active ingredient, there are over 40 active compounds n it. In fact THC makes my wife extremely anxious. The medical marijuana is pharmaceutical grade. You get the same thing every time. Over the counter stuff can be all over the place since it isn’t regulated. It may have more or less and vary batch to batch. I was skeptical, but I don’t think my wife would be alive without the CBD.

I walk across the street and get anything I want in Missouri.
I think realistically... anyone who lives close to a legal bordering state or who travels a lot... is getting it, and there are more options anyway, and then they're bringing it back to IA. As opposed to going through the med card process in IA. Our state is losing a lot of money, there is no doubt about it.

Missouri made $255M last year on taxing it. 600% higher than projections.
