Not terribly unfair. Baylor has won a national title in the last 5 years for cryin' out loud.

KU and Arizona top 2 for sure.
TTU and BYU riding high right now with their NIL sugar daddies. Sustainable?
Houston's where they are because of the coach, who is 70 years old and will retire any season now. I don't think it's a top job.

Think of it this way. We are #6 largely because of the culture of Iowa State and its fans (and I'll give JP/AD his flowers for guiding it). The others above us have huge advantages in resources and geography.
It seems about right, give or take.
My general assessment:
Advantages for ISU: Loyal fan base with mostly realistic expectation/demand, tend to be more forgiving of some ebb/flow (to a point). A coach's leash may be a bit longer than other programs, and level of appreciation for notable success is generally higher. An e.g., KU has the most prestige, but you are expected to be nationally relevant EVERY season.
Disadvantages: Lower compensation, fewer resources for roster $$. The infrastructure/facilities overall definitely improved in past couple of decades, but still probably lags compared to some other places.

I would then put ISU at #5. Houston is an amazing team, but is all due to the coach. Small school/gym and not sure the support is really that big at that school.

I expect a Houston dip once Sampson retires unless they're better resourced than I'm aware of. Houston's not Duke.

Houston isn't going anywhere. Kellen is going to be just fine and the Fertitta money isn't going anywhere. That arena is smaller but I'm guessing the suite revenue is pretty impressive.

Iowa State's been a Sweet 16/win the conference tourney type program for 40+ years outside the McDermott era.
Yeah it is hard to argue higher. I think you could make an argument some would have us above Houston but that is more of a preference of certain factors like fanbase.
I wouldn't say the same personally. We've had at least a brief period with at least a modest level of success with every coach in my 45 years of life excepting McD. Prior to Kelvin, Houston hadn't advanced past the first round of the tourney in 30 years and had made the tourney once in about 20 years.

Houston does have tradition at a higher level than that, but pre-Sampson it came almost entirely before ISU general relevance. (Guy Lewis era). Not a single NCAAT win from 1985 thru 2017, and only four appearances.
Caveat - UH wasn't in major conference from SWC breakup until joining Big 12, probably some disadvantages with that. But: Couldn't attain much success as a high-mid-major when you may have more opportunities to get auto-bids.
Since 1980, Houston has 7 Final Four appearances and has been in final four rankings 26 times.
