Did you know we knocked off #2 Purdue in '87 on their home court?

After our beatdown tour making a stop in West Lafayette I remembered this happened too. The 87 Orr team that took down #2 Purdue there in the preseason NIT. May they continue to invite us back every year they field a top five team early in the season.

Yes, I still remember watching that game. Living in Madison, WI at the time I didn't get many opportunities to watch my Cyclones.

I think that was the game they talked about during the broadcast, wasnt it?

Yep, distinctly. It was one of the most shocking regular season results of the Johnny Orr era. Johnny's teams were notorious for struggling on the road, to the point where road wins obtained an almost mythical status (part of it was high flying offense, very little defense, and I suspect another part of it was that Johnny built up home court advantage at Hilton so much in the minds of his teams that they carried that thought onto the road with them).

Lots of bad road losses to really bad teams during his tenure, so this was a totally unexpected result for me.

I just remember that Larry Brown never won in Hilton when he was at Kansas.

I was a senior and listened on the radio. That team got off to a really hot start and rose to as high as #10 in the AP before losing 7 conference games in a row. They turned it around a bit at the end of the season and barely made the NCAAs as a #12 seed losing to #5 Georgia Tech in the first round. Grayer averaged 25 and Lafester 22 for that high scoring team.

That was, I would say, my first year of fanaticism for the basketball team. It was kind of a dud ending to what started out pretty promising. I am still more of a basketball fan than football because football wasn't good at all then, and a Final Four/natty is realistically attainable in basketball at Iowa State.

Yeah he had terrible road records. I'm also certain this 87-88 team we started hot but had a 7 game slide late in conference play and limped into the tournament unfortunately. Those years made me a fan though as a kid!
