This popped into my FB feed. I was on my walk to class that morning and was pretty surprised to see the fire station building collapsed. And, yes, that was a white firetruck. The excavation that caused the building collapse was for construction of a new bar, appropriated named after this as The Cave Inn. Turned out to be my favorite college bar.

To think the human toll from that picture was only a single injury is incredible.

I bet that name was clever as hell for the first 5 years, then it just sounded weird.

When I saw the title of this thread, I thought it might be about the streaking phenomenon that struck Ames. But maybe that was a few years later.

Speaking of puns in campustown, how about the Little Red Book Store--in the little red building?

My older brother collected cups and glasses from ISU and passed it down to the next brother, who in turn did the same. Being the last one, I had amassed a fine collection of bar history by the time I enrolled. One was from the Cave Inn.

I passed the collection on to my oldest brother's kid (in a cool 'full circle' moment) so I don't have them anymore, but I really wish I could have kept them. I don't think my nephew has appreciated them as much as I did.

Streaking was a few years later. We all got a laugh when one of our dorm house guys was on the cover of The Daily.

One of my high school friends got involved too. Last I knew, he was still living or working in Ames.

"$50,000 aerial ladder truck"

No doubt the basic SUV the Fire Chief drives is now much more expensive than that.

Article says Cave In was a restaurant. Don't ever recall it being anything other than a bar. There was also a bar above it but don't remember the name. Along with the Head Shop barbershop.

lots of students would get drunk at cave inn and pass out in front of fire station. Firemen would have to step over them.
