Last night at a game it was 4th and goal on the 5. A pass was thrown into the end zone and pass interference was called. The refs put the ball on the 2.5 yard line and said 4th down. I thought at every level it would be an automatic first down with different ball placements depending on college, pro etc. What’s the correct call in Iowa HS?

There are several penalties that automatic 1stD in college that aren't automatic in HS.

My thought at the time was that DB’s should always be taught to tackle or interfere if beaten in the end zone. It would just be another play for the offense to possibly screw up and no score in any case. Don’t the pro’s put the ball on the one yard line and say first down?
I believe personal fouls are the only automatic first downs if the yardage requirements are not meant.
High school official here. Only automatic 1st down penalties in high school are the roughing penalties (kicker, holder, snapper, and QB). You can get a 1st down in OT from one of these. DPI is not one.
Thanks for the explanation. My confusion was caused by the rule difference at the college and pro level. I officiated basketball at the HS & college level so I give official’s calls respect because I’ve been there. The close up view at game speed is far different than the view up in the bleachers.
