I liked @Die4Cy 's idea for consequential figures in ISU history, so I piggybacked off that for this post.

Thread title is self explanatory. Good and bad.

For FB, I'm going with Oklahoma 2017 and Iowa 1998.

BB is a little tougher, probably some games in the 80s for the good, but that was before my time. Hampton 2001 for bad.
For WBB, maybe UConn 1999?

Wrestling, unfortunately have to go with the event of Gable leaving for Iowa.

General: Hiring of Pollard in 05.

I think we have to include KState in 2015. The Rhoads era ends in unfathomable fashion, and ISU begins the Matt Campbell era. Was Paul probably done? Yes. Did that game seal his fate? Absolutely.

Bit of a Pyrrhic victory for KSU looking back now. :D

Some football only picks. Basketball is harder to sift through IMO. They play so many games.

-1998 @ Iowa
-OSU OT stunner that killed the BCS
-Toledo @ ISU - CMC has commented before how much this game influenced his decision to take the ISU job
-@OU 2017
-Fiesta Bowl

In no particular order:

1. Hiring Jamie Pollard
2. Jack Trice passing away from his injuries after playing Minnesota
3. Dan Gable leaving for Iowa
4. Hiring Matt Campbell
5. 2000 Insight.com Bowl vs Pitt (first bowl win in program history)

Honorable mention: Losing to Michigan State in the elite 8.

The Oklahoma win was really beyond bananas. You have to track the week leading up to that to really appreciate how totally out of the blue that was.

What stands out to me was that before, ISU beating OU in football just wasn’t something that happened. It was fun when we would keep it close at home from time to time, but no serious person thought we’d win.

Getting **** stomped down in Norman in 02 was a brutal reminder of that fact.

Then Campbell beats a NC caliber OU team in Norman, with a walk on QB. From there we regularly competed with OU and beat them another time. That along with regularly beating Texas was a sign of the expectations Campbell had for this program.

I’d gladly replace the Iowa game for a couple years for a home and home with OU. Not Texas though, **** those guys.

I wish we could get a behind the scenes almost hard knocks recap of the week that led up to OU ‘17. Crazy it’s been 8 years ago, but it has changed the perception and trajectory of this football program.

Hiring Pollard has to be close to the top because what he has done here is nothing short of miraculous.

It was the beginning of the 3-3-5 stack defense.

Honorable mention for realignment and killing off the Pac12 a couple seasons ago. It’s recency bias, but it was a huge event in the future of the big 12 and ISU.

Honorable Mention: Brock’s coming out party at Home VS the unprofessionals (the birth of the Juicy Wiggle game)

* The Johnny Orr and Barry Stevens home win over a highly ranked Missouri - The REAL beginning of modern day BB success and the birth of Hilton Magic(?)
* The Terry Rubley and Dexter Green win in Lincoln.
* Iowa State's 1970 win over Arizona in the College World Series.
* The Fiesta bowl victory over Oregon.
* The 80-56 drubbing of UCLA in the 2000 NCAA tourney (Honestly, there are probably a dozen BB games you could plug into this spot.)

The Oklahoma win is by far the most important win in school history. It’s what set us on this path of unprecedented success. Being ranked, conference championship games, bowl wins, winning conference records, beating ranked teams, etc. The Oklahoma win started that.

There are lots of other great wins. But none more important.
