Iowa High School BEDS count 24-25

It's amazing to me the state of Iowa just absolutely insists on keeping their boot on the throat of schools like this. Just no reason to not have some kind of relegation or ability for schools to get off the mat or breath a little in a lower class. That should be done everywhere if you ask me.
The state does not care about schools that struggle, only that schools are bringing them in money at tournament time. If they really wanted to make it competitive, they would push every private school up a class, do away with the smallest class in football and then set up two classes for 8 man. Large and small, letting the smaller 11 man teams move to 8 man if they need to because of lack of players.
But none of that is going to happen, as long as the money is rolling in, and the schools benefiting from the current system continue to do so.

Just read that Hoover and Roosevelt High Schools have merged their football teams. Only 20 kids out for football at Hoover. They were 0-9 last year and Roosevelt had only 1 win. Hope those kids get to enjoy some success this year

Easily the most forgotten about metro school is Hoover. I have lived close to the Des Moines metro all my life and have never driven past Hoover High School or could even tell you exactly where it is. I think I saw on here once where somebody said Johnston school district is literally across the street from Hoover high School, like kids that live right next to the high school are technically in Johnston school district or something crazy like that

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if you started seeing this sort of happen in Waterloo prior to the schools merging in 2028 especially if there is a coaching vacancy. Who's going to apply for a job that's only going to be around for 2-3 years especially when several sports are already combined, like soccer, cross country, swimming and tennis. West is looking for a new baseball coach for next year after the AD tried to do it and went 23-87 over the last 3 years and decided to quit as baseball coach after parents tried to stage a coup. Talking with a board member about it he thinks they'd be better off just combining those teams now and just get it over with.
23-87…….my sons HS would be ecstatic to have that.

It's a mile and a half from Urbandale HS to Hoover HS, straight down Aurora. Merle Hay Mall in between.

I’m guessing Carroll accepts Hawkeye 10 invite opening up a spot in Raccoon River for a central iowa team.

Too bad Ames accepted little Hawkeye, the raccoon river is a solid conference and travel would be significantly less.

I’m guessing DCG will be making a jump to CIML sooner or later , they would be a good fit for the Raccoon.

Would saydel make sense to leave the HOIC and join raccoon river? Geographically it would, but competition wise not sure.

Yep, went to Hoover and lived 15 feet from Hoover property and 50 feet from Johnston. DMPS selling all that land to Johnston is the stupidest thing they ever did.

LHC to Raccoon River is a small step down competitively (and in size). Van Meter to Raccoon River makes the most sense to me.

Lone Tree and Dunkerton have both cancelled their upcoming 8-man varsity FB seasons.

Some of these small schools really need to be more vigorous with sharing programs and avoid screwing over other district opponents and varsity kids who really want to play.

Without a doubt, programs with low numbers would be better off sharing and giving the kids an opportunity to play. Sounds great on paper, but in reality, schools do not want to share with another program for a couple of reasons. They may see that program as a rival, parents that have cheered against that neighboring school for years, do not want to see their kids now playing for them. Crazy but a huge factor.
2nd part, its easy to get kids to sign up saying they will play in the spring, but when fall camp rolls around, many of those will come up with an excuse of why they are not going to play. You also have the real problem of kids saying they will go out if their school has a team, but are not going to play for the neighboring team. Basically they know they will play at their current school, but may not see the field or play as much if the two teams combine, so they are not going to the other school if the programs are shared.

If either of these schools bring back their program next season, then all the schools on their schedule that had them for a home game this year, will have them as a home game next year. So Lone Tree may very well end up with 2 or 3 homes games and 6 or 7 road games next season, if they have enough players.

Your first explanation regarding parents does unfortunately exist but is simply not acceptable.

Dunkerton gets absolutely killed by Don Bosco recruiting. The only male athletes Dunkerton can keep are the ones that want to play basketball.

I have seen it first hand, it's real and many in authority at the school do not want to buck it. It's not about the kids, but about the parents, and the coaches.
A lot of these small towns see the real possibility that they will be losing their school down the road, and many of them see sharing sports as the first step in that process, which is what they are trying to avoid at all costs.

And the refs that just lost a game!

Just kidding, my crew is supposed to have a Dunkerton game this year but sounds like we're still getting a check to not ref and potentially picking up another game that week anyway. I feel like a fired football coach and it feels pretty good

Our cross country boys team only has 5 boys and 3 are seniors. There is a real discussion on sharing next year and the best kid on the team said he won't go out if they share because he doesn't want to run with/compete for the neighboring rival town.

Its crazy sometimes, why would it matter is a sport like CC, when how you finish is based on time. So he would rather not have a team score, instead of running for a rival school.

I have sat in meetings and we would ask the kids, how many of you are planning on going out for a sport, and then see the number drop to a few when we talked about sharing with another school. The strange thing is when teams do combine, the players that actually still go out tend to prefer it because it makes for a better team. Now the parents are a totally different deal, most of them hate it.

To make it work, you almost have to do away with the existing school colors and chose something else, and then change the name nickname for the team. I know when Harmony went under and was looking at other schools, Van Buren agreed to changing their school colors and to chose a new mascot for the school if Harmony would bring most of their students to them. Once it was all over, and the paper signed, VB reneged on the deal, causing a lot of anger from the Harmony people, but it was too late, and nothing was ever done about it. They are still the Warriors and their colors are still Orange and Black, just like they were before the consolidation.

Woah, that's a wild story. VB really told them they would change mascots and school colors and then when the ink dried reneged?? Thats wild.
