Did we lose too much?

At least the TT game, not sure it would have made much difference in the KU game. Helped but not enough to overcome their QB just chewing us up.

Our secondary never stood a chance with our LB core against KU. As soon as the safeties crept forward we were beat over the top. If they played back, they attacked the middle of our defense.

Especially since most of the perceived "big games" are at home.
BYU and UI not having a QB, or having an unproven one, along with ASU coming to Ames in November certainly doesnt hurt our chances.

FWIW, when we play at CU, i think they'll have 3 losses already and their fans will be back to apathetic for Prime and his antics

I think the common national takes like this usually centered on Noel and Higgins are crazy lazy. Obviously they are great but with what we added in portal, healthy returners, tight ends, and planned development I feel the group as a whole can replace production of 2 stars.
My worries would be more overrating forced experience and average play at linebacker with great depth( Bacon and natural development should help) and that we didn’t do enough at D-line On the outside to improve around Orange. Again this is if I was nitpicking.

Biggest concern is really big 12 balance and if close games don’t go our way again, could win 7 and still be very solid but obviously be disappointed.
The "forced experience" at LB is good for depth, but our starters this season shouldn't be considered a part of that. Between Bacon, McLaughlin, and Ebel, we have three guys with talent and experience. Throw in Brezina and Lovett, and we're not talking about walk ons getting thrown into mix out of necessity.

Just of curiosity, what do you guys think is a reasonable amount of time spent on researching these teams for a preview show(s) to cover all the P4? 30 minutes, one hour, four hours?
It would take about thirty seconds to check Portal listings and see that ISU added Townsend and Sowell. Another minute or so to see who they are and what they’ve done.

Returning production is a better data point than just using returning starters, in my opinion.

For example: if Miss St returns 19 of 22 starters from a 2-10 team or whatever they were doesn’t mean should vault them up the preseason SEC rankings.

Bill Connelly SP+ has us at 41st (61%) returning production fwiw.
lol @FinalFourCy which part did you disagree with? Do you prefer returning startets that weren’t productive or weren’t good?

As long as Iowa State has Campbell, Heacock, Mouser and Rocco, I believe.

Boohoo, we lost a receiver or two. It's loser mentality to count out the Cyclones due to attrition in an attrition sport.

Everyone realizes just because most aren’t picking us to win the conference doesn’t necessarily mean they think we will be bad.

Very well could be 10-2(7-2) and a really really good team and not even get the chance to play for the championship? I hate the size of conferences.

The Tech game last year was a comedy of errors on every single side of the ball. Burkle’s fumble inside the red zone and attempting a 50 yard FG in pouring rain were the killers, but the defense had Tech in 4th and long on the GW drive and couldn’t get a stop. That fanbase wanted their OC fired until that game

After the QB draw on 3rd and 10 that forced the afore mentioned FG, our fanbase wasnt that keen on our OC either

I can only think of 2 games under Campbell where the defense allowed a winning score after ISU took the lead or tied late in the game: Tech 2024, Tech 2021. Probably 20+ times the offense stalled going for the game winning drive, late, but not the other way around.

I think it's rather intellectual laziness from any prognosticator, but nearly all of them outside of Cyclone country is doing this. The line of thinking is pretty straightforward:

ISU loses two WR to the NFL who commanded a huge chunk of the offense.
ISU went to the CCG last year but won a ton of games by less than a score to get there. VARIANCE
Remember when this same thing happened in 2020....2021 happened.

So there it goes.

Frankly what chaps my hide a little is that the same people in the next breath will prop up Baylor as a contender for the league title while putting Iowa State in a tier below.

For all intents, you can throw a loop around 6-8 teams in this conference and make a very reasonable case for them to win the league, and I think it's somewhat foolhardy to claim there's much of a tier break among any of them.

Rocco’s passing yards
2023: 3120 yards 13 games
2024: 3505 yards 14 games

The experts can talk about losing receiver production, but it looks like we have a QB that will get us over 3000 yards this season no matter the receivers he has to throw it too.

Yep and with a healthy LB core we probably win both the KU and Texas Tech games. It goes both ways.
I think you win if you just throw a ball on first down. We were averaging over 7 yards on first down pass calls but we seemed allergic to calling them in the Tech game. I think Taylor Mouser did good for a first year OC but that game definitely was one of his weakest.

They were basically the same receivers but I get your point. Rocco is great.
