Williams & Blum: Recapping a crazy 10 days

Why is there no talk of adding an NIL $$$ cap per sport? I am worried that D1 teams without a football program (Creighton, Gonzaga, etc) would have a huge advantage in MBB and WBB NIL spending. Maybe they already do, so not much would change.
Some type of argument about artificially hindering their earnings potential.

I really wonder who CW is referring to when he said (around 46:40), "He's a bit of a scapegoat. One could make an argument ... that we had a guy on campus a couple of weeks ago who did the same thing;" concerning someone demanding money.
They were just saying that the QB from Tennessee is being somewhat vilified in the news, but what he did in asking for more money due to the market is happening at every school in the country.

Trying to enact any sort of salary cap without a CBA between the ADs and the players is a great way to get sued.

And good luck trying to get a CBA in place when I suspect the most powerful entities don't want one.

Such a depressing state of affairs for my favorite two sports (college football and basketball). The meteoric rise of huge money generation was totally mismanaged. Just too greedy and disorganized to recognize the wall that they were inevitably going to hit.

Just think of the influx of revenue into college athletics over the last 20 years.

Yet there’s never been more pressure to find more money to keep up.

Cost escalations due to no singular profit mandate. ADs and college administrators with little leadership, and doing little in actual revenue generation, just CYA and getting theirs while punting any issues down the road

We’ve had the worst of PE without any of the benefits that can come with it. It would be better to have a group of investors take over and create a singular entity in which a desire for profit has a byproduct of keeping cost down and greater good concept rather than prisoner’s dilemma arms race

Should have dropped their objections/restrictions to actual NIL at least a decade ago if not more.

Also, can you imagine being Blum and working your ass off through all that stress and having totally uninformed message board warriors dumping on you through it all?
If you have some time, josh pate does a great job conveying the anger and a way forward on these problems..

Not close to maxing out. Not great news
It is crazy to me that an organization can pull in 122 million in revenue and only spend 15 million between athletic aid and meals to these players and we somehow can't figure out a way to spend 21 million in rev share. That is still substantially less than 50%!

I don't care if we have to cut sports or lower non-revenue salaries you HAVE to pay the full 21 million to stay competitive. If you don't stay competitive you will lose those sports anyways! The only way we have men's golf or women's gymnastics is off the backs of football/basketball bringing in the money.

When you’re spending $5 million on WBB, yet can’t pay full revenue sharing in revenue generating sports, what’s occurring is an accountant that’s been a decent college administrator is suddenly needing to be a businessman

In JP’s defense, most of his cohorts are the same, but just administrators of bigger monopolies

I think we're at the Big 12 or NCAA mandated minimum number of sports already.

Absolutely, losing -4.5 million on WBB and -2 million in men's wrestling just can't happen.

Tough choices will need to be made. Pretending this isn't a business while signing college coaches to 4-10 million dollar contracts and having TV deals over 50 million per year is just silly. These aren't non-profits and we need to stop pretending they are. Treat this like the business it is and cut the bloat.

This is laughably wrong. I shudder to think where ISU would be if JP was simply a former accountant turned decent college administrator.

I'm actually relieved there's an effort in Congress to do something. And I almost never say that. The thing that I think is interesting is that an antitrust exemption for an entity managing aspects of college sports will go well beyond making deals on player compensation. That's where getting it passed will get into the weeds, IMO. If the NCAA is setting a cap and penalties for going beyond it, they will also want to decide the $$ terms of media deals, scheduling, and the bowl system for example, and there will be powerful lobbies against those. But I don't think it works without having one entity at the top with final say over everything. The NFL is the model, and that will be hard to get some people to get on board with.

Blum is Jesus.
