At what point do we accept that we have to have these guys and develop them? We're not getting sure fire AA's at all 10 spots every year. Unfortunately, we can't afford that. There's going to be years like this year where growing pains are going to happen. My hope is that we can keep a top 5 team every 3 out of 5 years. I like the trajectory we're on.

At the core that’s the most sustainable LONG term model to recruit and develop, hit on a couple “diamond in the rough” or underrecruited types and NAIL instate recruiting and bordering states IMO. Fill/Plug holes with NIL guys but always been perceived as a program that develops talent rather than just acquires it.

I admittedly haven’t followed wrestling recruiting as hard over the years and some of that is by design as it’s harder compared to football but IMO if a kid doesn’t go to Iowa we HAVE to be their next choice and land them…I will prolly show my ignorance but in the recent memory of Voelker at UNI, Sloan and DeVos at SDSU, Downey at UNI how and or why did we not get them? Same way with any Minnesota, Wisconsin Illinois Nebraska kid that doesn’t that coveted offer he is after or instate offer I feel like we struggle a little at Midwest recruiting ‍♂️ We have our honey holes out west and in Michigan/Ohio(somewhat) which I’m fine with but kind play 3rd fiddle to Iowa and UNI in state? Maybe I’m off base iDK just my perception

So if you are injured and have a thin resume there is no reason anyone should expect that wrestler to be any good. Gotch you. I assume you would say the same thing for Angelo as his only quality win is over Bockman who has not made noise at NCAA.

I literally asked for a reason since the resume is so thin, looking why everyone is so optimistic. Sorry for asking such a simple question.

I assume the Angelo you're referring to is Angelo Ferrari. I hope you understand the difference between the #1 recruit in the country and a guy who didn't make the top 100. Euton has been a pleasant surprise but that's a different standard than getting on the podium at the NCAAs.

spot on. This dude was prolly hating on Evan after his True freshman year. Euton is tough, and he does everything right. Plus he looks like a serial killer, which I like.

I'm not hating on anyone. Some guys develop, no doubt about it. But many others don't, or at least plateau. I'm simply asking why everyone is so sure of additional and fairly significant development in this case.

Seems like an obvious question to me. Didn't realize I'd strike a nerve like this.

Fair. What has Euton done as a redshirt FRESHMAN that has convinced he is not the guy? My data says, his last match he was better than the match before. Also, he tore his ACL, and finished the match and didn't want the team to give up 6. VS. Bartelt (not picking on, just comparing) limped around, fans got on Dresser because he continued to wrestle and you woulda thought he was gonna die. Only to find out, he did not tear anything. My point? The serial killer has an upside, and we now know he is tough.

I see Bartelt was on crutches at the UNI dual. Precautionary?

I think it's a fair question and for me, in the ideal scenario you have Gaitan and Euton competing for that spot to hopefully double our chances of getting someone good there while bringing in a known commodity at 174.

Euton is a redshirt SOPHOMORE not a redshirt FRESHMAN.

Being tough is great and it's a big reason to like him. But I think most will agree with me that you have to PROVE YOU ARE the guy (one way or the other) instead of proving you're NOT the guy. It's something that's earned. Getting beat by the only good guys you wrestled this year isn't it. Not for me, anyway.

Regardless, here's to a full recovery for Euton.

My mistake. But let's continue this discussion. Would you agree that he only wrestled what 2 matches? 3? I am not sure...but how can you judge where he was going to end up by wrestling only a few matches? you keep saying he is getting beat by only good guys and that is good enough for me. I am not saying that at all. What I am saying, the dude (1) is tough as hell (2) got better from one match to the next (3) I believe he was only going to get better with more time and lastly and prolly the most important part, they asked Frost who was going to have a good year before the year started and he, without hesitation, said watch out for connor euton. So, FOR ME, that is the best stamp of an approval, not an arm chair QB sitting at home. My two cents

Not to mention he beat both Gaitan and Riggins out for the 165 spot. IMO he is way more consistent than those two, he would have made the NCAA tourney no problem and probably would have won a few.

I feel like this ofseason MJ needs to commit to one weight class early. if hes going 174 he needs to get just a bit stronger
Near the end of last season, Dresser (I believe) said as much: Gaitan needs to get stronger. No hint that he would be going down. Why I was surprised this season to see that he was going down.

I agree with much of what you say. I just see a vast difference between being in the ballpark of the best and actually beating them. We can roll with him, and that's cool, but if there's a path to upgrading there, you go for it IMHO.

I think MJ is starting to finally round into form but he was a mess early in the year. And everyone beats Riggins so that's not much of an achievement.

I'm not sure if weight is the issue, he needs to get better on his feet. He can't rely on the "big move" all the time. He reminds a bit of Degen, would always do the double underhook to a trip, it worked early on, but his last few years were a struggle because he didn't have much of any leg attacks.

I can agree with this somewhat. He has leg attacks and has used them against some top guys ie. gaven sax. his problem seems to be knowing when to use them and not getting caught up in a scramblefest.

Kind of off topic, but i was just thinking about Paniro and NCAA's. Obviously he'll make it and be a decent seed, but I was thinking I bet anyone seeded above him will not love to wrestle him because he has the tools to win it all and beat anyone, but on the other hand if I was a lower seed I'd be totally cool wrestling him cause it'll be a match that whomever can get a takedown will win. Just a weird dynamic.
