Bad news for the Big 12…at least until UNC figures out how to get out
Bad news? Not sure how you came to that conclusion.
If all existing ACC schools are tethered to the conference through 2036, that opens the door for the B12 to bid their inventory on the open market in 2031-32 with no competition from the ACC. The prevailing thought was that ACC/FSU/Clemson would settle on a GOR/contract expiration shift from 2036 to 2031-32.
From the B12's perspective, one would hope that CBS/Paramount (with new ownership), WBD and Amazon would actively bid on the B12 in 2031-32 especially if they had partial CFP rights as well.
That said, there was this blurb from the Yahoo story: "The schools are proposing changes to the conference’s grant-of-rights agreement — at the center of both lawsuits — such as possibly reducing the penalty fees tethered to the contract or an amendment in its length." So there remains a possibility that ACC schools could bail out prior to 2036 with reduced GOR penalties and/or exit fees.
Also, I find it difficult to believe that the current ACC geographic clustereff will continue as-is through 2036. For example, Syracuse playing at Cal last night in a MBB game at 10:30 ET is truly ridiculous.
