***2026 Minnesota Vikings***

Late to the conversation but last night proved why you don't hand the keys over to Darnold, when you have JJ under team control for 4 more years at a CHEAP rate.

If you are concerned about JJ starting the year healthy, then you offer Daniel Jones the job for $10M + incentives.

Imagine how much better the roster can be with 2 more Van Ginkel and Greenard level free agents, which you can afford not having to pay a top QB contract.

I don't disagree, which is why I think they do another reclamation project with Daniel Jones and try and build a sustainable roster around them. If JJ isn't ready, let Daniel start and then if things aren't going well, make the switch and let JJ take over. People forget how close JJ was to Darnold in training camp last year. The lost reps sucks, but if he can keep making big strides, we will be fine with him
Everything I've read points towards the Vikings just using Jones to get a comp draft pick and he doesn't have any future with the team.

Understand disappointment of Vikings fans. Last night was surely a kick in the balls that we all know as ISU fans (probably not unlike the Big 12 championship).

Darnold was obviously not good but - as others have pointed out - this loss is not in him alone.

I don’t think you give him a huge payday or long term contract but JJ is still a question mark (no fault of his own, obviously). Could very well be a step up from Darnold or could be another first round QB pick that doesn’t pan out.

I don’t understand the unbridled optimism about him at this point.
I simply don’t think Darnold wver will be the guy so let’s try something else.

Lots of mediocre QBs getting paid like elite QBs getting coaches fired. Lawrence, Dak, (I think Love will eventually handicap the Packers). You either have to do it with the roster already built for a 1-2 year window (Rams, Detroit), or pay a QB their value in Geno and Mayfield, or do it with a Rookie contract QB (49ers, first super bowl for KC, etc.) Paying Darnold 40-50 mil will not lead to success. A lot of holes still on this roster that need to get filled via free agency because we don't have any draft picks.

Paying anyone lots of money does not guarantee success. You might save money on a QB to get a better supporting cast. But that doesn’t guarantee a better performing supporting cast. Paying a $2 million Kick Returner like Deebo $24 million is just pissing money away. Price for a Top 12 QB seems to be 50 million plus. Brock just turned 25. And was All Pro. High character and low risk to be an embarrassment publicly. Get him an OL and the Defense needs DL help. $52 to $55 million. 4 years. $140 million guaranteed.

Agreed, it is just a bigger risk to overpay for a QB than to overpay for any other position because the number is higher.

And if Kwesi has shown anything so far as GM he’s not going to overpay for a QB. Either Darnold is franchise tagged for a year or we are going with JJ and starting the future next season.

In Brock’s case you can pretty much guarantee he will not cause off field problems and is a positive in the locker room. Brock has proven to be as good or better than the other QB’s in the Top 5 to 15. He is 25 and is an All Pro QB. Mahomes, Allen, Jackson and Burrow are not available. If not Brock Purdy then who?

If Brock gets a top 5 deal in the NFL the 49ers are cooked. If he gets top 15 money I think they will be fine. I don't think Brock is a top 5 QB in the NFL.

Actually they are cooked if they don’t sign him. Long term contracts offer flexibility of kicking the can down the road. There might be some outs. But locking down a QB who played well for n the playoffs and Super Bowl and could have easily won the game is the smart move. Dre Greenlaw injury cost the game. Purdy just turned 25. He is similar to a Drew Brees. And the potential to get even better.

Name the realistic QB’s available and the cost to get them. Both in money and draft picks. And also the costs of the contract standoff on both the locker room and also workouts and training camps.

Probably not but he did have the 7th best QBR season this year and played horrific according to some. Had the 13th highest rating of the year, but was also number 1 last year and his rookie year. I think that certainly shows limitations with injuries the 9ers sustained this year.

Probably the next attempt at the Darnold playbook would be Daniel Jones.

For Darnold and Purdy, maybe the Jordan Love cap approach. Loves is wild. Cap hit goes 30m, 36m, 42m, and 74m. Rams sort of did this. Eat a huge cap hit 1-2 years. Rams are a great drafting team, so they could stay competitive.

Though the Vikes probably could push forward a big cap hit next year. 49ers will probably do the opposite. Keep it low and try to compete the next couple years, then go through a year or two of turning over the roster.

These giant QB contracts also have horrific dead caps tacked on to the end... Jordan Love, for example will cost GB $50M for three years beyond his contract length.

Another way to say this is you can make a roster competitive today with good but not great QB's, it just comes at the mercy of cancer to your roster mgmt planning when they leave the team...

There are only 2 current QB's in the NFL worth mega deals IMO (Allen/Mahomes)
