Off-Topic: Southern California Fires

They very well may have been stuck by this point. There are a lot of canyons in this area that have one road in/out and if that gets cut off, you're stuck. I've heard they were telling people to get out of their cars and walk out in some places.

It's a good reminder that if they tell you to evacuate, that's the time to leave. Not time to start getting ready or give it another 30 minutes to see what happens.

Good point. Yeah, not sure we flatlanders with our grid of roads aways appreciate that the only way out might have been cut off miles from where you are at and before you know you need to leave.

by the time things are like that leaving probably isnt an option either. might as well film it I guess.
Probably the case. I remember all the people during the Campfire Wildfire who got in their cars to flee, but never made it out, and were burned to a crisp while in their cars. Just horrific.

I think we get the impression it is a fire with a single face and it's spreading like some big forest fire but with that wind it's jumping all over the place. Sort of like comparing a reaction to a slow rising river flood to a flash flood. Not sure we appreciate the chaos of it all.
Yeah, wind driven fires can kill even the hot spotters.

Yeah, it's not like you have a couple of different options of which way to go. The terrain is really rough in the areas getting hit hardest by these fires - very steep canyons with narrow, windy roads and only a handful that go all the way through. Lots and lots of houses are accessible by only a single road and there's no chance of off roading it either in a vehicle or on foot.

Yeah, I don’t know that trying to get away in your car would work at this point.
In watching some coverage was amazed how close to the fires reporters were. Basically like they were covering an everyday house fire but with closer access since there was no FD at the house.

So in an urban environment it appears like there is less a chance of a wall of fire overwhelming someone because of yards and streets. Could be wrong.

Hope those reporters are getting danger pay and have their insurance updated!

Wildfires aren't treated differently than other causes of a fire by a standard homeowner's policy. It's typically going to be covered.
People aren't going to be able to get insurance here shortly.

thought I read something that some insurance companies won't operate in CA but the state is trying to incentivize them to come back. Or if they are operating, they don't offer fire protection anymore and if they do its sky high premium.

Husband works for one and they don't operate in CA or FL, I believe. Louisiana is another but midwest states aren't immune either. We just got our 2025 home insurance bill and it's up 37% over last year.

0% contained doesn’t seem ideal
They need the wind to die down. They can get some containment (or at least a grasp on the situation) relatively quickly once winds die down. This is a little more complicated cause there’s 3 different fires in close proximity though.

All you can do in 60-80mph gusts is try to get people out of its path.

Yup you’re correct 100%. I just did a quote for a client that has zero home claims and a 14 year old roof….premium was way more than he expected from all my carrier options. It’s really tough conversation one after another
