Backing into parking spots

What is up with people that feel they HAVE to always back into parking spots? Any of you out there that can explain this? I have nothing against it, just find it odd and interesting.

I will say... I will try to find spots in parking lots where I can just "pull through" the spot and into the the spot opposite of it because it does make it easier to leave... but that doesn't require backing up into it.

We have neighbors on our street that ALWAYS back their vehicles up into their garage even. Have never seen them just pull in normally.

Only place I purposely back in is the parking ramp at work - aisles are a bit on the narrow side and just makes it easier to leave. Especially if you have a pickup parked next to you.

Neighbor does this and it makes no sense to me BUT when I parked cars as a teenager at a country club we had to back them into the spots.

As someone who regularly backs into spots, I do it because I am not in a hurry when parking but I may need to be in a bit more of a hurry when leaving for somewhere. Granted I'm an anxious person, so most of my life is preparing for things going wrong.

That's interesting.. thanks for the response. This is what I really was trying to get at... is it a mental thing? Sounds like with you it kinda is?

In larger vehicles it can be easier to get in an out that way. Plus you can see all the other world idiots as you are pulling out.

I back in park at the school lot when picking up the kids. Leaving is infinitely safer when you can see forward. Backing over a family or even a single child is highly frowned upon. Plus there is time to kill when you are waiting for the bell to ring.

To me it boils down to which is a safer place to back up? Into the driveway/parking spot or the road/aisle of the parking lot. It's generally the first one.

You're always going to have to pull in/back out. Why do people get so concerned if someone does it backwards?
I specifically stated that I have no issue with it at all... was just trying to understand the reasoning behind it?

Bank robbers and their ilk also always back in for a speedy getaway.

I used to always get quite the chuckle during Covid when I would back in park in front of a gas station, but my mask on, and walk inside. My how times have changes.

I don't mind people who back in, however the people who back in while someone is driving behind them and still back in, making that person wait, are the worst.
This is the only time it bothers me. Our church lot people do this when 10 people are trying to find spots and inevitably there is someone trying to back in that can't get it right the first time, so all the rest of us have to wait. Good news is it's a church lot so I'm super holy and patient at the moment.
