A few random thoughts...

Some Iowa fans are taking the loss hard in part because they don't know this is just typical Curtis Jones. This is who he was second half of last year and all this year. He's a statistically elite player in the entire nation. Long, plays tough defense, doesn't make mistakes, good hands/finishing, crazy range on his threes. They might be hung up on him not starting every game, if you made an All Big 12 team statistically right now he'd be on edge of 1st team and zero doubt second team.

Iowa's trio of Sandfort, Dix and Freeman is a very good core but there's not much beyond it. Ignore that they're nerdy white guys, it is a good core, but they're still missing a dynamic playmaker who can get to the rim. They are always missing a true elite point guard. Harding gets assist stats sometimes but it's really because he just dribbles around with the ball a lot and possesses the ball so much, he's not an attacking point guard like all 3 of our current combo guards or even a less heralded guy like Jaren Holmes . It's been a loooooooong time since they had a Dean Oliver or Andre Woolridge and ISU has had like 10 to 15 very good attacking pgs since then. Fran is just somehow Kryptonite to recruiting or developing elite pgs.

As an NBA fan I kind of scoffed at the Sandfort-to-NBA craze last year and I'm still on that line of thought. He's really similar to like Matt Thomas if Thomas had shown less defensively. Thomas absolutely TORCHED the summer league every chance he got and still couldn't stick beyond some cups of coffee. In terms of looking at a guy who could be dropped into an NBA game tomorrow and contribute as a role player, it's by far Curtis Jones. The next guy might actually be Jefferson if he could improve his jumper a little. Then the tier below that you've got Gilbert, Momcilovic, and Sandfort who all have something that would need to take a big step forward but there's maybe an outside chance, MM with the obviously highest ceiling of those guys.

This is spot on, we got EIU's A+ level game for 20 minutes in the first half, and instead of folding and getting down 15/20 we fought back and took it down to 7 at half. Teams in the past would have rolled over, but this team fought back, and got stronger as the game went on, while EIU died the last 4 minutes of the game.
This team when it is locked in and hitting shots can be anybody in the country, and we did that last night with Milan having a poor game.
I found it very odd that Chris Williams said multiple times in the postgame pod that "Iowa didn't play its best game" or they "didn't bring their A game"... what the hell you smokin, Chris!? Iowa played out of their a** for like 33 minutes. Like, literally their A+ game. And they couldn't pull away from us.

Something I noticed on my game rewatch. Our conditioning was so much better. I really think Fran wagered going small and not calling TOs would wear out Iowa State’s Defense and the Presidents down the stretch of the game.

However, it seems it backfired and Iowa was the one that ran out of gas with 5 mins to go. Allowing Iowa State to feast on offense and take the lead.

Do you happen to know where I can see this replay?

From memory I think there was 1:30 left. I think we were up 5 and free throws or possession probably would have iced the game. Iowa didn't score on the fake opportunity anyway.

He very obviously fouls him intentionally before the ball even goes out of bounds, and on replay it looks very possible the ball wasn't even out of bounds.

Nobody's talking about it, but if Iowa hits a 3 there to make it a tight game it's just an atrocious call. The NBA has VASTLY better replay than college. Coaches just get a few challenges and all calls/non calls can be challenged. A play like that is challenged and they actually would have said "well it doesn't matter if the ball went out of bounds or not because before it went out of bounds Iowa committed the most obvious foul on purpose so we're going to make correct call. Foul on Harding.".

Second half really was some home cooking for them, the difference in quality of the two rosters was just too much for it matter.

Some of the whistles Freeman got vs the no calls on Gilbert going to rim were laugh out loud bad.
it wasn't just the calls he got, but all the cheap shoves and pushes and holding he gets away with in the post.

The first half was definitely their A game and about the only way they could beat a team as loaded as ISU. The reality is they're a lot of Iowa kids who play second fiddle to ISU, it's impossible for them or any team to be motivated like that every night out, if they could be, they'd be top 25.

Yeah there was never anything out of bounds, I have no idea what the officials were looking at on the replay.

It should have been an inadvertant whistle and went to the possession arrow which would have given ISU the ball.
