Yearly Matt Campbell to ?? Thread

Exactly this. I’ve said this before, but it is 100% true. Minneapolis radio station was interviewing a former sports writer for the Star Tribune. A question was asked about writing articles for head coaching vacancies. The writer said the editor would come in, say you need to list 5 people. 1 must be a national brand name, 1 must be a local person, and pick 3 that you think would make sense.

These writers have ZERO knowledge of who actually will be the new coach; editors give them a framework and make them write something so people can be drawn to their paper/site

I won't call crap on this. How could I?

For some years I worked as a sports journalist in Iowa, covered many Iowa games as a feature writer, not game reporter. Also, happy to say I reported on ISU football, too. Had a lot of fun.

I have never heard about a situation where such a thing has happened as the poster states occurred at the STrib. I am NOT saying it did not happen. I AM saying I was startled when I read this post.

If it happened at the STrib, it did not happen everywhere. I worked in a sports department where staffers worked their asses off to report what they discovered.

Right?? Am I supposed to say ‘absolutely’ or maybe?

Qualify your statement, do you know absolutely or are you reporting hearsay?

I'm not trying to be nasty, just accurate in what we fans state. What do we think we know, and WHY do we think we know it? That's all.

I had to laugh as twice they alluded to the lofty standards required of NC athletes.

"an understanding of the academic rigors at a place like North Carolina."
"an institution with the academic demands that UNC seeks to uphold."

Maybe I missed the sarcasm emoji, but this is the same school that had make believe classes for athletes not that long ago.

For those who say he hates Michigan, and he might, Bo hated Michigan and is now a legend at Michigan and came from Ohio State. Hate is hate but a chance to win a National title is a big deal. I don’t think there is any doubt if Michigan called he would at least listen

He has an agent? Or are you talking about his wife????

I think this post could be accurate. I would be worried about Mt Union than all these guesses by media. He may want to slow down someday and coach at his beginning point. Just my thoughts.

Darn. Beat again by the Toledo phantom.

Seriously, I could see Campbell longing for the good ol' days of playing football for the love of the game and loyalty to your team. Iowa State may be the best FBS school for him, but he can't enjoy having to re-recruit players every day and negotiate with so many for NIL deals.

Kinda nice to have an ISU coach in the headlines, eh?
Must mean he/we are doing something right.
Hopefully he sticks around, and we're having this conversation a decade+ down the road.

No idea if he would go to UNC or not...but it is more likely that he would take that job than it would be him leaving Ames for OSU or ND because he isn't getting hired from Iowa State to be the OSU or ND coach! That is not happening (unless he wins back to back national championships here)! Chapel Hill is an awesome campus...they have a ton of money and they will be a Big Ten school eventually. It would be a very attractive position for any up and coming coach. That said...I hope Matt Campbell is the HC for ISU for another 10+ years!
Earle Bruce? Earle didn't even win the Big 8, never won more than 8 games at ISU! MC has accomplished more than Earle did at ISU. Earle was hired from ISU to coach at Ohio State.

Hates Michigan?! Where'd you get that?

Not long after he arrived in Ames, it became clear that growing up, CMC's favorite college team was Michigan. The source for this? An ISU All-American who is close to the program.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

He would say no.

CMC can leave and go to an equal or better job any year he wants. Tons of programs would love to have him. It doesn’t have to be a blue blood. We don’t have the financial resources to compete with most of them. Look at Indiana’s new contract. CMC will leave if him and his wife tire of Iowa State or feel another situation is better for them. The way I see it, it is our job the make him feel appreciated and supported. Make him want to stay.

JFC the entire state of Ohio would riot if Ohio State hired Matt Campbell. Full on burning **** in the streets.
Agree and would add ND & Michigan. Unless he gets in the NC and wins or plays close, top 5 programs aren’t impressed with 9 years and bowl game appearances only. Unless the Big 12 starts performing well in the CFP, there is a less than sterling reputation nationally. TCU’s complete flop in the NC was like the air going out of a balloon.

The UNC scandal still stands as the largest case of academic fraud in the history of collegiate athletics, and that is not hyperbole.

Hundreds of UNC athletes in various sports were given academic credit for fictitious courses over a 10 year period in order to maintain their athletic eligibility.

However, because there were a small number of non-athletes who were also given academic credit for the non-existent courses, the NCAA decided in its infinite wisdom that UNC would not receive heavy sanctions because this impermissible benefit was not given to athletes exclusively.

And you wonder why people lost their faith in the NCAA.

I think the Stanford fake athletes one is probably abit bigger. But as an NC State alum I am contractually obligated to agree with you
