I don’t mean this as some Cy-Hawk bash on Fran, because I saw the stat and I was honestly curious how TJ at ISU has stacked up against top 10 teams.

From my count the last 3 years, TJ is 7-7 against top 10 teams. .500 against top 10 teams is obviously very elite company. Keep it up guys!

I think TJ is somewhere around 7-7 over the last 3 years against top 10 opponents

What shocks me is that Fran has actually played that many teams in the top ten. Outside of Sparty and Purdue, most must be out of conference.

Some surprises in there for how much we hear about some of these guys.

I'd like to see how much defensive efficiency plays into this; I'd guess it's a big component.

As much as I believe that Kansas must be destroyed, Bill Self is ridiculously impressive as a coach.
Things can go wrong even when you are cheating but he still manages to win.

Beard is not as impressive on that list as the reputation would make you think.

Using sportsreference.com and counting individually, TJ is 10-9 at Iowa State and 11-11 overall. His ISU record puts him at 2nd behind Self and his overall puts him at 3rd behind Cal. No idea why he wouldn't be on this list but oh well.

Im surprised only 2 of those losses were Iowa State. For some reason I would have thought they were responsible for more

Wonder what the years active or time frame cut off is.

They don't list KY on Petino's school list.

Yeah no idea what the criteria is. Definitely not a minimum amount considering TJ has played against more top 10 teams than Sampson, and to go with that, no way Kelvin has only played that many in his career.

This just tells me that Mark Few and Gonzaga are very overrated and why they shouldn’t be in the Big 12. .323 against top 10 yet win 25-30 games per year. lol. Cupcakes abound. Also, lol at Mad Fran’s record.

He hasn't been around too long, so probably isn't considered "notable" yet.

There's a follow up reply that says it's since 2009-10, which introduces a few more questions.

For example, McDermott was still coaching at ISU that year and beat a top 10 Kansas State, but Creighton is the only school listed for him. Are they counting that win or not?

My guess is not enough games played? Surely Sampson over his career has more than 18 total games played against Top 10 teams when you consider he had 12 years at OU and 2 other HC stints before that so must be games with their current school during a certain time frame. McDermott's record probably looks worse if you include his time at ISU and Sampson surely had more than 5 top 10 wins at OU in 12 years there. Some of the other coaches have multiple schools listed under their names.

I just counted quickly on sports-reference.com, which I think has AP rankings (including tourney games):

2022: 1-4
2023: 5-3
2024: 3-2
Overall: 9-9

Against top 25:

2022: 5-7
2023: 9-5
2024: 7-6
Overall: 21-18

I looked for his career he is 11-14 which would put him 5th on the list!

Gonzaga has had some great players and in college BB you can be a really good team with one great player, but their conference is so weak and I think they suffer from that when they get into the tourney and have to play good teams every round. Going 10-8 in the Big 12 is better prep for the post-season than going 14-2 in the WCC.

Fran McCaffery is an amazing coach and they should give him a lifetime contract:mccaffery:
