B-Bops tastes good. You just better plan to be near a toilet pretty quick after eating it. It’s coming out one end or the other.
Agree. Their food has always been top-tier for fast food for me, but I only go to them maybe once every couple years because of the amount of grease left in their food. Both their burgers and fries are excellent, but they find a way to take a shortcut through your system. Almost the same speed as Hu-Hot.

Gotta admit, been reading the last couple pages of this thread and totally forgot this was the PFG Remote Work topic!

Not only that, but some absolute garbage takes these last couple pages, too. BK over McD? 5 Guys over any other upper tier fast food burger place? Canes over Chick-Fil-A?!?!

Laughable.

Big Al's BBQ

Interesting. Do you know if Al is out of the game completely now?

Huh. I have lived in Ankeny for 20 years, and I never knew Big Al's was here. Must have been VERY brief.

I remember his commercials about "what's an Asian dude making barbecue on the South Side of DSM doing?" but (a) never knew he expanded to Ankeny (b) his place was originally from Adel.

We get a LOT of restaurants here in Ankeny that "give it a go" and don't last ...

1. Hardees that later became a veterinarian's office (Ankeny Blvd)
2. Hardees they tore down a car wash to make, it lasted a few months, then they tore it down to make a bigger car wash :) (Also Ankeny Blvd)
3. The place where Jimmy John's is now has been at least 2 prior sandwich places (one had "Mighty Loins" written in the window, which was odd...)
4. Long John's -- RIP (now Abeloardos)
5. Godfather's Pizza -- RIP (now a Starbucks)
6. North Burger King (tore down, now a coffee place)
7. Pie Five (now Flame Cantina)
8. Ben's Burgers (now Curbin' Cuisine)
9. Blimpies
10. El Charro --> Los Charros --> La Cava (unsure if this was new ownership or just a new name?)
11. Okiboji Grill (now The Other Place)

who has more?

He was in prairie trail so I’m sure his rent was outrageous. Given the mediocrity of his BBQ and the high prices, I’m not shocked it didn’t work.

I’m only speaking based upon the vibes from Adel…he was beloved in the community. He developed a ton of goodwill during the pandemic. His location here was pretty dank and his BBQ was just ok. But people kept showing up I think because they valued him so much.

But he basically bailed on Adel out of nowhere. Word was some of the staff didn’t even know until they saw the note on the door. He certainly didn’t announce or explain himself to people here.

I’m guessing he had a “golden” opportunity to move to prairie trail and couldn’t pass it up. Though he probably couldn’t afford to keep his Adel location at the same time. Still seemed like a crappy way to leave.

Eh, many of these places were there for many years, sometimes decades, before closing, and/or were part of chains that had a lot of closures. Doesn't seem unique to Ankeny.

Went into Lola's spot when she decided she'd had enough of running a restaurant. Still bummed she closed, that place was so good.

I was crushed when they closed the Ankeny Godfather's. Also, the Ankeny Okoboji Bar and Grill was awesome. They had an elite happy hour.

The moral of the story is more chains and fast food in Ankeny, even better to put in on Delaware avenue and ignore the 40k? people who live west of Highway 69. More... MORE.

Try something new with Delaware by creating a street two layers high, like maybe the largest parking garage ever.

Include multiple ramps going up and down for good measure.
