To be fair to Mulkey I don’t think refusing to sit for an interview is something someone should be criticized for. I also think that dumping a request for comment during the NCAA tournament is a BS move. Those two moves by the reporter lend credence to it being a hit job.

With all of that said Mulkey is an awful person who almost certainly mistreats players. She will reap whatever she has sown with her awful actions over the last 20 years. I’ll be interested to see if the article describes what we all expect or if it is more like the Nikki Moody hit piece.

"My kids didn't even know I said that yesterday."
"They were in shock when they saw all that in the internet."

So they didn't see it or they did? I'm confused.

I mean, its all in context though: you can't refuse to sit for an interview, then complain that you were only given 48 hours (which is plenty) to respond to questions when they've actually been trying to sit down with you for 2 years, which at any time those same questions could have been answered.

The 'request for comment before publishing' thing is standard journalism. A chance for the subject of the story to answer any claims within, and it serves as a final piece of due diligence for the reporting news source in case they missed some major element of the story. In comparison to the hines story mentioned back on page 1, they didn't really give ISU a real chance to respond and IIRC hoiberg had refuted the claims before Hines published the story.

I received a lot of dumbs, and that is okay...I will take my punches to the gut..If her preemptive strike threat proves to be the correct call, I am more than willing to reevaluate and apologize. But this journalist is not a paparazzi TMZ photographer looking for a quick score...

I am big fans of everyone who disagreed with me; I really respect you Boxter; I was thinking people want this spiked before the article has been released. I know people here respect and are protective of women's athletics and the athletes, and that is laudable, reasonable, and, well, the right and just thing.

My qualm is her approach-it is very similar in tone to what we have seen elsewhere, especially referring to another litigious person we all know well. When threatened, sue first, then once in court, delay to the hilt. We all know full well it works like a charm. Even if the case is specious, the expense, the scrutiny on all sides, and the stress can be crushing, and can scare people into silence. The lawyers I am sure she already has on retainer know the playbook, and they will be sure, if necessary, to court-shop until they find a judge they like.

Coach Mulkey has the right to defend herself, and I am sorry, but this could cascade into politicization by various agents provocateurs (especially as a woman of accomplishment). If this story and journalist are found to be fraudulent, then I would welcome the strongest sanctions, and for her to be vindicated....

My dumb was that on CF at least it's not being swept, there's another thread that allows some of the components you mention (and I agree that's her tactic) to be discussed.

That's well reasoned. My response, which I have withdrawn, was based upon my reading it as a suggestion that @BoxsterCy was sweeping things under the rug in defense of those whose methods you despise. He doesn't wear that kind of red hat.

Eh, I don't know why so many of you care about this at all. She's a successful tough coach who rubs some the wrong way, but gets results. That I know of she's not any dirtier than the average coach. She probably can never be accused of coddling her players and some walk away upset. Is she likeable, no. A story based on disgruntled players is like listening to one side of a divorce.

Nah. There's more than enough evidence out there even without this story that Mulkey is a trash person.

Except we don't know what the story is. All we have so far is that allegations will get published and that Mulkey decided to go scorched earth on the reporter before anyone has had a chance to read them. We only have one side right now and that is Kim's. Kim's side is that a nationally relevant, award-winning journalist has it out for her and has spent 2 years on a hit-piece. At the same time, she claims she doesn't have time to respond to the journalist directly even though it concerns something she clearly cares about. As far as one-sided stories go, it's not exactly the most sensible response nor does it present a very believable perspective.

Even if you are ******* mad about the allegations and believe it all to be ********, put out a level-headed press release through your athletic department media people. In other words, treat it like the non-story you believe it to be. Her treating it like a highly damaging personal attack makes it seem like whatever is in the report is potentially so damning that caused her to react emotionally and likely against the advice of her AD. (I say this because I cannot imagine any AD would approve of her response.)

Would saying Mulkey is somewhat a female version of Bob Knight be a fair comparison? No one argues that she has got results on the court just like Knight did and both have confrontational and nasty personalities. Eventually when you are a horrible human your actions over the years eventually will come back to bite you.
