At some point I think the only thing that makes sense is the Top 16 brands breaking away for their own circle jerk. Nothing but blue bloods vs blue bloods and no schools to subsidize.

This would push schools like Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Illinois, NW, etc into our level.

Frankly, that would be a lot more fun to me. The only reason this reorganization sucks is that schools that bring nothing more to the table than we do are getting to go along for the ride because of who they hooked up with 100 years ago. If ISU had hooked up with Ohio State and Michigan instead of Nebraska and Oklahoma, we'd be in the same boat as Iowa. If they had hooked up with Nebraska and Oklahoma, they'd be in the same boat as us.

The problem with that is that eventually there would be a top and a bottom of that 16-team circle jerk, the bottom half would no longer be viewed as bluebloods and the top half would question why they're carrying these inferior programs and giving them a cut. So then you have an 8-team circle jerk, and then eventually a 4-team circle jerk when another top and bottom form. If the core logic behind the formation of a 16- or 20-team superconference is greed/money, I don't think that greed suddenly goes away. The top brands would always feel deserving of more.

Yeah, then there is dissatisfaction in the 4 team league. 2 teams are kicked out, and the 2 left play at 7 p.m every Saturday on ABC. Must see tv. Then, one team isn't happy with it and the team gets booted. The lone team plays against himself, burnt orange against the white.

This is why the new Big12 is going to get killed in the TV ratings, while the B10 and SEC are going to shine. Put Big 12 games on ABC, Fox or ESPN in prime time they are going to draw a decent rating, but that same game on ESPNU or worse yet ESPN+ and ratings drop into the crapper.

For all except a handful of teams, the network the game is shown on, is the most important component in determining the ratings.

if UNC and uva are tied at the hip to VT and NC State, not sure either the sec ir big will bite.

my guess is fsu and clemson are gone. Miami? At worst the big 12 gets louisville, pitt, GT, and duke.

I'd be shocked if there's any such thing as two school still tied at the hip. It might be a posture, but Oklahoma, Washington, Oregon and California all saw state schools go different directions in just the last round. Further, each of the schools left behind were all potentially going to be left outside the power conferences, and two actually are.

If the B10 or SEC want UVA or UNC, they might lobby to bring along VT or NC State, but they'll still end up going when the B10/SEC tell them no.

I believe more people have ESPN+ than ESPNU now, or getting close.

Last fall ESPN+ Was over 26M subs and growing by around 1M per quarter.

Last info I can find for ESPNU, was in summer 2023, and was about 37M and dropping close to 1M per quarter. (edited to fix date) ESPNU lost about 15M subs between 2021 and 2023. During same time ESPN+ gained almost 15M.

If they stay on that trajectory, ESPN+ will pass ESPNU soon if not already.

I could be wrong, but I thought I read that ESPN+ can't yet be measured accurately compared to the other metrics because of their much delayed reporting methodology. Furthermore, the 'replays' and syndication (e.g. cyclones.com) have to be factored in which I'm sure delay/skew accuracy as well. In other words, I expect ESPN+ to climb the ladder progressively over the next few years. Now, how that translates to advertising dollars is another matter. I know I always watch the game replays and fast-forward over the ads. So, I'm the viewer who will change their advertising approach. I expect more marque along the bottom or court/field overlay advertising than spots on streaming services in the future. Just my logical opinion.

We can stand around and trumpet the virtues of ESPN+ over ESPNU all we want, but since one is streamed, you have to be actively looking for the game, while the other you do not. The broadcasts on ABC, Fox and ESPN can be watched by the average person scanning around to see what is out there, the same cannot be said about ESPN+.

As great as streaming is, it does require a lot more looking than just switching on the cable or sat. TV and finding the game.

I think the point is…yeah it’s not hard to get to the game when you are actively seeking it. You aren’t getting the casuals who are just looking for a game to watch.

I don’t use ESPN+ unless Iowa state is playing on it or its Big 12 game that is close and is going down to the wire. I don’t think I’ve ever watched another league using the app.

You still have to go there to stream ESPN+, and while you’re there you can’t just switch to a different network game without changing which app you’re on. While it only takes a few clicks on my remote, too, then the app has to load, and then I navigate to the game I want … and if I want to go back to ABC/Fox/etc I have to wait for YouTube TV or whatever app to load again. It‘s not a smooth, instant switch back-and-forth like it is with “normal” channels.

A typical TV viewer might just click his remote to check on an ABC game while the Fox game he’s watching is in commercial, or switch to an ESPN game if the ticker shows that game is close … or, if you’re using YouTube TV, you have four games on at once.

I don't with hulu. I just go to the sports app click on the game and then can go back t regular tv. It stays in recents for me so their is no going back and forth.
