49ers - Brock Purdy - Still and Always #1

Brock threw 5 of his 7 INTs in the 3 games the Niners have lost with him supposedly having concussion trouble with only 3 touchdowns. So 26 TFs to 2 INTs when he’s not concussed. Just insane.

He's never going to get a bigger arm though. His deep throws are usually 35 yards max and he's not looking for the receiver run under it, he's hitting them in stride with a strike. I imagine he knows his limits and doesn't go for throws he isn't confident he will have a high success with. Some people think his arm has improved since the surgery which is somewhat consistent with what they claim happens with pitchers after the same surgery. If he could improve his distance some, he would be a terror.
His pass to Samuel traveled 48 yards in the airgame against Seattle. He didn’t have to heave to make that throw. One article states that he improved his velocity since joining the Niners and clocked at 55 MPH, which is the speed Mahomes had in NFL combine. Purdy has a weak arm thing is a myth not a fact.

Yes, RE is a goober but this is pretty entertaining. He clearly loves Brock, AKA "The Santa Clara Game Manager" Lol

There's no doubt that Purdy saved Lynch's and Shanahan's jobs. The 49ers mortgaged their future to draft Trey Lance... and he was such a bust compared to Purdy they traded him away for a 5th round pick. Under ordinary circumstances that is fireable incompetence. And yet, because they drafted the odds-on favorite to win NFL MVP with the last pick - and has outperformed every 49ers QB prior to him - this will never be talked about.

That never gets talked about enough - Purdy saved the 49ers franchise.

Hold up. Hyperbole much?

It's been well documented that the 49ers offense became a different beast as soon as CMC landed in the bay area. Excluding the first game against KC, in which he had about 2 days to prepare, CMC had been credited with truly being able to unlock the offense that Shanahan envisioned. The 49ers won the next 5 with Jimmy G at the helm and probably would have had similar results the rest of the season had he not got hurt. The ceiling might be higher now with Brock, but without CMC, this offense just isn't the same.

I don't agree with all of the message you responded to, specifically "...has outperformed every 49ers QB prior to him..." as there are a couple guys named Montana and Young who both did it at a pretty decent level. That said, the offense has most certainly improved with Purdy leading it over Jimmy G. Purdy has opened things up and offered CMC more run to operate.

As fans of Iowa State, it's sort of our job to participate in hyperbole! We've never had a pro player that has had this much impact in their team winning. If there was ever a time for us to make crazy claims, this is it. We shouldn't worry about logic.

Right, but saved the franchise? There's a line between pumping sunshine and just being silly.

Well, “saving the franchise” may be strong, but he almost certainly saved John Lynch’s job.

GMs get fired when they trade 3 first round picks for a QB who ends up a bust.

Your definition of sunshine pumping is wrong. Sunshine pumping is putting lipstick on a pig. This is, at most, overstating impact.

And who cares? Fans are supposed to brag about their players and make all sorts of claims. That’s what being a fan is. And bragging about Purdy on an Iowa State board? That’s exactly what we should be doing.

If someone wants to say he saved the franchise who cares? It’s hyperbole. That’s what sports is about.

But they were the ONLY team that drafted BP. Last pick, as we all know. But no other NFL team even saw that much potential to 'waste' a draft pick on Purdy. So give them an ounce or so of credit for at least doing that.

You could use a little bit of common sense and realize I was talking about Lance, Garoppolo, and the guy that came before them and NOT Montana and Young - who haven't played for the 49ers in decades - especially since I specifically referenced Lance, Lynch, and Shanahan.

I would argue that Brock stepping into the lineup changed CMC's game also though. With Jimmy G, CMC averaged 4.1 yards per carry and never once hit over 100 yards rushing in a game. After Brock became the starter through the end of the season not including Philly CMC averaged 5.4 yards per carry and had 4 games over 100 yards rushing.

When Brock played poorly the 49ers lost. When they won he played well.

The Bills just demolished the Cowboys and Josh Allen completed 7 passes for 90 yards and rushed for 24 yards.

The Ravens have won 6 games where Lamar threw for fewer than 190 yards. They won 4 games where he threw for fewer than 190 yards and rushed for fewer than 40 yards.

Those guys are highly relied upon by their teams, but it's simply false that they are significantly more important to their teams than Purdy. Whether it's Purdy's air yards, W/L vs. personal performance, lack of reliance on YAC vs. past MVPs like Rodgers and Mahomes, EVERYTHING points to Purdy being the MVP. Everything. Not a lot, not most. Everything quantifiable and measurable.

I could have assumed what you meant, but it wasn't what you wrote.

And that is what some talking heads are using to lift CMC as the MVP however, in the games vs the vikings and bengals Purdy had statistically good games apart from the turnovers (which is a problem, but every qb throws them) however CMC had some of the worst games statistically he has had the whole season also.

Good article from the Athletic, unfortunately a pay wall site.

The best part:

And Purdy and Haliburton believe that each represents the essence and highest point of something they love: the Iowa State ethos.

“I think that’s the best part about it, to be honest,” Haliburton said.“ I think something that me and Brock both share is we both really love our university. Brock was there for four years; I left after two, but my dog’s named Ames. I really embody Iowa State. Both of our girlfriends went to Iowa State with us. We both love the university. We share that bond, and it’s cool to see us having success because I think we both love going back, love going to Ames, and we’re proud of our university and it’s something that they’ll be able to use in recruiting and stuff … that we’re having success at the professional level. It’ll help get kids there because, obviously, as kids, we all want to play at the professional level, the highest level. It’s cool that our school gets to use that.”

Agree, I might have done a screenshot of that and sent it to a person or two ;)
