Collegiate Duals Mon 12/18

Just got home from the match. Great to be in the house for all of the wrestling. Cyclone fans made a great showing, and it felt almost like a home meet. Can I just give a big Kudos to Zach Redding for hanging very tough in a weight class way over his head. He is a real competitor. No real head scratchers today (well, maybe the Frost tech, but Bailey is tougher than previously credited. He gave Arujau all he could handle.

Now the Cornell thing - the crowd was upset when Shapiro did not show, but visibly angry and leaving when Ramirez did not show. If they are taking heat for it on their own boards, they well deserve it. Really bad presentation, and not good for the sport of for the crowds that showed up and paid to see the best. Dresser has always stressed putting on a good show and a good product for the crowds, so if he has something to say, I think he won't be too approving if what was done. Totally pathetic.

And one final note - the Montgomery Bell Academy facility was a very nice venue, and I heard a lot of fans giving their approval of Nashville, which has much to offer. I hope all have a safe journey home.

I have received quite a few messages regarding our Iowa State dual so I figured I would get right to it. We had starters get injured during our previous matches in the day. If we wrestled Iowa State first we would have had all our starters in. I’m not going to risk further injury and endanger my student-athletes for a dual in December. Good or bad in the eye of the public, my job is to protect my athletes and if they aren’t able to compete they will not. We have Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Missouri and NC State amongst others remaining on the schedule. I think we have the toughest schedule in the country and I expect to wrestle our best in each event. Injuries are part of the sport and they unfortunately aren’t predictable.

I guess this was the coaches response via email after the meet after catching some heat.

Imagine having that little shame that you would press send on that nonsense

Pretty wild that only guys at weights where they were ranked higher than ours got injured or dinged up earlier in the day

It’s honestly sad. The athletes falling on the sword for the coaches. The Cornell kids wanted to wrestle. There is zero doubt in my mind. Any competitor wants that match. Their coaches failed them, and failed the sport.
Wife asked me this morning to wash the dishes and get the kids’ lunches ready for school before I left for work. I said I want to, I really do, but I hurt myself getting out of bed this morning and can’t.

She did not see the humor in my comment.

When you know you’ve done wrong you run to twitter to get defensive. Honestly it’s pretty pathetic they think wrestling fans are just stupid. Coach Grey the coward is brainwashing them

Be interesting to see if the portal bites them. Most Kids don’t like this crap.

Things that are true for Cornell and wrestling

1. Ducking ISU will help improve their NCAA seeding. It's outrageous but it will
2. Running to Twitter so fast after the fact to defend themselves means one thing, they didn't expect that much blow back especially from there own fans.
3. The coaches have way to much power in college wrestling and will continue to hold the sport back as long as they have it.
