***Official 2023 Chicago Cubs Thread***

I'm curious if yesterday's lineup was a "can't lose" lineup after dropping Tuesday or if Ross has realized his lefty lineup just doesn't work.

Back to back games where Morel isn't starting. If anything, glad he can have a bit of a mental break.
He needs it. The walk off homerun really helped us all forget that he's been one of the worst hitters in baseball for the last month. The mental break worked for Seiya so hopefully it works for Morel.

Hoyer spoke with the media today and announced Smyly will be in the bullpen.

I’m genuinely confused at what Ross’ role is. Kind of seems like maybe he’s just a keep the players happy guy and has zero strategic input, unless this was the FO saying “holy **** Ross, no”

Would guess this means Thompson won't be up long and Wicks will be called up to replace him when Smyly's turn in the rotation is due up. Pitching is a mess right now it feels like. Really need some guys to step up and eat some innings so we don't have to shuffle arms back and forth from Iowa.

They need to take a hard look at carrying another arm and option Wisdom.

Wow, this Pirates team is a bunch of kids! No shaving cream needed in that clubhouse.

My expectations are low but optimism is high, Brennan Davis has been tearing in up offensively and defensively in High A. Feel like he has to be getting near the point in his career where they have to let him get a taste of the big leagues.

I’m no doctor but if I recall correctly, he had a serious back injury last year and a serious core injury this year. If those two were connected, I could see why he had struggles in Des Moines for a couple months. But if we can get him back to what he was, what a nice and unexpected tool

I like him to get to the playoffs, but don't have any expectations. That last week of the season scares the hell out of me.

He's going to have to prove that he can stay healthy before he gets a shot in Chicago. There are plenty of younger OF prospects in the system now that store trending better than he is that he may be better used in a trade next year if he is healthy and plays well in Iowa.

Cubs were one of 10 teams scouting Yoshinobu Yamamoto on Wednesday. What I’ve read on him says he’s a better version of Senga. Mid-90s fastball and an unhittable splitter.

Getting pretty obvious Wisdom being on the roster is blocking our DH. 12 total bases last night.

Every time I've been to an I Cubs game since he got called up last year he either was not in the lineup for that game or injured. Would love to see him play in person once. I Cubs are really fun to watch right now with all the talent they have that is on the verge of a callup or already has been up at some point.

I'm certainly not 100% sold on Ross for the future, but as a manager you gotta have your guys backs outwordly to the media. I would expect those decisions are joint decisions but sometimes its not time to tell the world.

Rossy's response was snippy when asked. Until it's announced a guy is no longer starting the manager has to have his back.

I think part of the challenge too is Ross has had to manage with the hand he's been dealt over the years and let's face it the roster construction the front office has given him hasn't exactly been a loaded deck. This may be the most talent he's had since the underachieving years before we traded the core away a couple years ago and even this roster has issues at 1B 3B and pitching staff that you can only hide the deficiencies so many ways really. He's on track to have his best season as a manager (by win % 2020 was his best but that was a short and awkward season) and coming into this year I don't think most of us thought the playoffs were even possible so from that angle he's probably done a better job than expected. If the front office improves the talent on this roster significantly in the offseason and we struggle next year then its fair to question Ross but for now I will give him the benefit of the doubt. I like his personality and demeanor and felt after he retired as player he would make a good manager but I assumed he'd start by managing in the minors for a few years first. He's had to do a lot of on the job training and work through his mistakes in a market that has a big spotlight so given the lack of expirience and lack of talent on the roster at times he's done alright. This playoff push you have to give him some credit for too as this team could have easily went in the tank after losing 7 of 8 in late June/early July and looked more like sellers than buyers.
