A friend of mine and his girlfriend at the time were...how shall I say..."interrupted" one night by security on the 50 yard line. Mid 80's.

Does anyone remember (early 2000s), there was a school student class president or something along those lines, and it got discovered that he was running a site called bellybuttonporn.com? He had uploaded pics of a lot of GSB members, or something similar, belly buttons.

You’re close, but he was very open about operating the site, and my recollection is that every picture was taken/posted with the consent of the belly button’s owner.

October 1976. Gerald Ford is running for re-election and comes to ISU to campaign. It's an outdoor event, down by Fisher/Scheman. Ford says something around "It's great to be in Ohio" instead of "Iowa." Of course it was all over the front page.
Lived on second floor of Linden. Room was southeast corner. Secret service roaming the halls and sharpshooters on roof of CY and Larch

My sister was a freshman in '76, I remember her telling my parents and me about that.

This is really understated. That street used to get so wild. I was leaving a house party one night after a football game, circa 2005, and saw two chicks having relations in a tree. Not up against it but up in it, like 2 stories. When a crowd gathered, which didn't take too long, a cop eventually showed up and everyone disappeared. I looked at the arrest log the next week and never saw anything that looked like they got booked. Have a feeling the cop was thinking the same thing we all were.
The '04 Veisha Riot started on Hunt Street at the apartments on the far southwest end. Cops showed up in riot gear and busted the party. Told everyone to go home but made everyone walk to Welch Ave. as the bars were closing. Then all hell broke loose. Next thing I know people are getting beat with clubs and smoke everywhere. Cops were 100% responsible for that one.

Every step the cops took escalated the situation, they were itching for a fight.
  • Roughly break up large house party in riot gear.
  • Funnel people from said house party to Welch.
  • Mass in middle of the crowd in full riot gear at Welch & Chamberlain, randomly pepper spraying/tear gassing people.
  • Close down the bars in Campustown and force everyone out onto the street while also…
  • Deploying tear gas and pepper spray from both Welch & Chamberlain and Welch & Lincoln Way
  • Push the crowd across Lincoln Way and continue to tear gas them outside the largest dorm in the country. It was a warm night and Friley didn’t have AC so everyone’s windows were open.
  • Cut the power to the surrounding neighborhoods, bringing anyone who was inside out.
Somehow, their internal review found they did everything exactly how they were supposed to.

I somehow missed this action. Watched the battle of the bands Concorde, decided to skip the bars and hang at my friends apartment. Woke up the next morning and saw what I missed on CNN.

My friends brother lived in Friley that year. He had tear gas drifting into his dorm room through the window.

Probably a good thing. I had a buddy up that weekend that got his ass beat by the police in my front yard. He had some pretty good welts on his back. Welcome to Ames!lol

The tear gas was noticeable at my apartment at Lincoln Way between Hyland and Sheldon. I can’t imagine how bad it would’ve been in the rooms of Friley.

Though they did change a lot of their behavior for Veishea 06, so it showed they had learned things even though they cleared themselves of all wrongdoing publicly. They were a lot more proactive about working with party hosts, stopping by early to meet the person who lived there, let them know they were there to help if things got out of control, hand out veishea swag, etc. Our little gathering on lincoln way got on the news when one of those cops stopped by around noon with a reporter doing a veishea story. It was a much more cooperative atmosphere and less the antagonistic one that contributed to the riot in 2004.

Of course, between there and Veishea 2014 they pretty much abandoned all those changes. They started showing up in full riot gear from the get go again, things were antagonistic again, concerts were moved off central campus (which was designed to have people doing things off welch\party streets), etc and we had predictable results.

Of course, that still doesn't excuse the stupid **** happening on a tuesday of all days. The university continuing to go with "veishea week" really didn't help things there.

Speaking of Veishea 2004, anyone else remember that disastrous comedy show friday night?

Hiawatha Rutland came out and basically attacked the crowd. Incredibly unfunny.

Then later there was some improv thing with Horatio Sanz and others, it went terribly. People just started leaving during their set. Jack McBrayer went on to talk about it a few years later:

What about embarrassing improv shows? I’m sure you have a ton.

Oh, all the time. I did one touring show with Horatio Sanz. We went to, I think it was Iowa State University, and we were in this field house, so people were sitting on the floor. It started out with 2,500 people in there. We delivered the most mediocre improv, and it went from a crowd of 2,500 to 250 people in the course of 45 minutes. It was grim.

I kind of give partial credit to the riot to that show for starting the weekend off on such a **** note.

Gotta have the Strange.net on there. ISU's internet is legendary and the guys that got eventually busted by the FBI for hosting that server which was the fastest file transfer experience imaginable. We would literally download the movie instead of using a DVD because it was faster than opening your drive and putting the DVD in for loading.
Awesome memory and reminder. Was telling something today about it (a bit younger) as they talked of music downloads from Limewire...i.explained how you could get ANY albumin seconds.

I arrived just late enough to hear of strangesearch but after it was gone.

I *do* remember however when itunes released for windows and suddenly every mp3 everyone had was viewable (and downloadable) on the network through itunes. I had a massive number of songs at one point.

Bought a Sega Dreamcast just because of Strangesearch. Burned a spindle of games one weekend.
(Now where in the hell did I put that a decade ago?)

I want to hear the craziest, wackiest, weirdest and most wild Iowa State stories you guys know for a project I'll be working on with Connor Ferguson this summer. If you can remember general dates or when things happen, that would be preferred so that they can be more easily researched. I don't care if it is something off the field or court or some crazy game that you remember. I don't care when it happened or how long ago it was. I want to find a way to preserve some of the urban legends of Iowa State athletics.
The time Dwayne Crutchfield outran the 100 yard dash conference champion from San Jose State for about a 40-yard score.
