Coach Campbell would be wise to spend some time with special teams

Two blocked punts nearly caused a loss vs Iowa. Three missed field goals and a poor snap on an extra point vs Kansas.

It could be argued ISU outplayed KU on both sides of the ball.

I believe we were clearly the better football team. If both teams played a completely clean game, I think we win by double digits. But we always make WAY more mistakes than our opponents.... and a lot of times that costs us wins we should have.

As you said, it nearly cost us the Iowa game again this year. If Iowa wasn't so horrible, it would have.

Winning the stat line but losing the game has become a frighteningly regular occurrence. That is the exact opposite of winning in the margins.
Literally the antithesis of winning in the margins. That requires teams to not make mistakes and be sharp in all 3 phases.

We are sharp in 1 and okay to outright bad in the other 2, either by mistakes or generally poor execution.

If he hasn't been spending a lot of time with ST's already.... he has no idea what he's doing. It is costing him wins.... I would think he might want to spend some time with that group.

I don't understand why ISU relies so heavily on special teams? With ISU's D you'd think we wouldn't have a problem going for it on 4th down more than any other team in the country (and with all the short crossing routes that ISU runs).

"Attention to Detail".....
I like Cambell but am not in love with him like most....and not ready to put him on Mt. Rushmore yet like most.....
We will be very lucky to get 6 wins this year.....hope I'm wrong......

A little bit of a tangent, but I'm not sure why anyone punts vs. Iowa.

Don't forget the muffed punt and horrid kickoff coverage. Can't seem to kick it out of the endzone, which 95% of D1 schools can do.

I agree having a dedicated coach should help special teams overall, but it isn’t a magical solution to random mistakes. Teams with special teams coaches still have muffed punt returns and missed kicks.

Head back to hawkeyenation.com - your offense is worse than our special teams.

According to the website they have a dedicated special teams coach in his first season at ISU. My point is Campbell should get involved because clearly there are issues with punting and placekicking.

Not to mention completely dominating the stat line and squeaking out a win.

It's been the same for 6/7 years...it's obvious CMC doesn't care or know enough about Special teams. Since he has not fix it yet why would it suddenly change now?

Answer...as long as CMC is coaching here, just accept that Special teams here are going to be abysmal.
