UCF and BYU are now in the league. Culture matters about zero in the game now. If you have (or the potential to have) good football and can make money, welcome aboard.

Agree...my comments about CU's decision to leave reflected the point in time when they left the Big 12...not today. Completely different world!

I can't figure out how Arizona State doesn't have better sports teams. Just walk around that campus and I don't know how many young males can turn that down if you know what I mean.
I had you pegged as an older dude. What are you doing carousing college campuses, hanging out with coeds?!?!

Duh!
Go toe toe? heck when this all went down in 2010 it can be argued the Big 12 was the best football conference at that time, certainly the deepest. The Big 12 got to good, or to big for their britches and the SEC and Big 10 didn't like it. Other leagues had a very hard time recruiting Texas, the Big 12 basically had the state locked up. Even all the northern schools had around 25 Texans on their rosters. I think from 200 4to 2014 or so, whatever version of the Big 12 there was, was a top 2 league in the country.
Not to mention also top 1-2 in MBB, WBB, baseball, etc.. The powers that be had to rectify this and use members own egos and insecurities to sow discontent. Certain schools were dumb enough to bite. The argument can be made that A&M has been the only one to benefit and I think that changes with TU heading to the SEC.

Duh!
That was when Texas fell. aTm opened the pipeline to Texas for the SEC and Texas never recovered.
On a podcast, a former okie state player talked about with the advent of spread offenses in the B12 that the SEC started taking all the real OL talent and hasn’t looked back.

Would you rather screw or practice? Get the scholly, chase trim, get your degree, go on with life. The percentage of college athletes making the pros is pretty small. I'm glad/proud that ISU has as many in the leagues as we do right now.
I'm to lazy to do the research but, it seems to me we have as many in the pros no as we have ever had by quite a margin, especially if you consider the amount of playing time they get.

Not really. Arizona football is in a slump, but they are not perpetually bad. Plus, Basketball (both men's and women's) is super solid. Bring on U of A!
Agree. Arizona has a lot going for it. The state of Arizona is producing more HS football & hoops players. Tucson is a great town. Plus I think the UA, ASU, UU & BYU rivalry can be promoted. Also think in 10 years maybe SDSU or UNLV might be ready to move up from MWC.

I realize football drives TV $ today. But on thing the Big12's new commissioner needs to do is find a way to get more $ from hoops. A Big12/Pac12 joining could have 8 or more teams in the top 25!

Don't even have to promote them hard, as they were all in the WAC together until the late 70s! I remember when the Arizona Schools joined the Pac. Yes, I'm old!

Colorado never really fit in the Big 12 culturally which may or may not be important. They felt more like a Pac 10 school and wanted to move that direction. I don't blame them...wish they hadn't done it but I get it. They were an outlier geographically and were treated as one. The Big 8/12 loved including Denver as being in their market's footprint but what did the Big 12 do to use the Denver area? Did they host any tourneys?
They were an outlier in the old Big12. But Denver would be a central point in a Big12/Pac12 consolidation.

CU would have:
  • It's old Big8 rivals in ISU, KU, KSU and Okie State
  • Strong SW rivals in Utah, BYU, Arizona & ASU.
  • Bring back their Texas recruiting presence. IMO it was a mistake to value So Cal over Texas. A lot of Texans have 2nd homes in Colorado mountains.

Not actually a bad article, but I personally believe they have even less of a chance of making the B1G than we do.

I assume Walton will stick with UCLA and go to the B1G, but if he stays with the PAC it would be a hoot to have him in Ames for a game.

I know it doesn't make sense to want Cal, but damn, it sure seems weird to not want THEE flagship public school in the largest population state in the country.

Just goes to show the old cable boxes/population model went from gold to fools gold in 10 years.

Yeah I agree, with that. I think UU is probably the most valuable of those 4, at least when considering future returns.

value to the Big 12 is probably something like this:

1. Oregon
2. Washington
3. Utah
4. tie Arizona State
tie Arizona
6. Colorado
7. Stanford
8. Oregon St
9. Washington St
10. Cal

I am wondering if we are undervaluing Cal with their massive alumni base. With an idea that Amazon might be looking for more integrations with Universities, that could be big.

I’d be happy to add Cal if that was a possibility if we were under 16 schools. But it’s hard to think about Cal as a school 17 or 19 and especially so if there’s no good 18/20 to go with them.

I also think Cal would have a lot of reservations about joining the league because they cannot use public money to travel to nearly every Big 12 state.

I'd say Oregon St & Washington St. end up in Mountain West since there will be no Pac 12.

Unless they vote to dissolve, I think they'll just backfill more teams. It will essentially be like the Mountain West or something, but still have the Pac 12 name.
