I'm watching my interest in college sports fade right before my eyes. Why watch minor league sports when the pros are right there already? alarson nailed it, the value has always been the schools and the attachment of the fans to those schools. Hard to feel attached to a bunch of mercenaries who are just here for a year to audition for the next best thing.
You just wrote exactly what my first thought was after Chris and Blums Sunday night podcast.

I'll 100% be dialing back my interest in Iowa State. That is wild for me to even type. I'd trade the Minnesota Vikings turning into the jaguars for an ISU national title 100 of 100 times..

Are we going to enjoy supper successful under class men anymore? Do we all need to appreciate the good times while they are happening?

No salary cap free agency. And we are a bottom 10% revenue market in the power conferences
We're going to have to do what we're doing on Pollard and Light, but on the AD itself. There are ways you have to go around some things, but in very simple terms, sell the MBB program. Some group takes on the costs, in exchange for the upside. JP can keep the long term brand benefits.

For 200k I'm surprised TJ and friends don't come up with the money- they'd likely make it back.

If you viewed major college athletics as franchise, we're a good investment opportunity. Years of austerity and lean operations have the revenue low, but we're still a large state school in a college sports market, one with a growing alumni base, near the largest metro in the state. Decades of losing before it became a big business has result in being near the bottom our revenue potential.

In which case, you'd go find a new employer.

Plenty of employers, especially near the entry level pay everyone working a certain job the same rate. Higher performers who feel they are worth more are free to seek opportunities elsewhere.

Absolutely, if you're being exploited then find someone who will pay you what you're worth. Why would you support a system that doesn't allow them to do that?

Podcast is out. He'll be in the portal in the next 48 hours.

Tyrese is testing the waters to see what his worth is. Can't blame him. Just stinks
I realize we have to suck it up and not blame him, but I am curious as to how (& especially when) he came to this decision. Meaning, he really received big time publicity in his performance in that win over LSU...so did suitors come calling then? Or was this something he felt he was now more mature to seek out? Heck, I don't even know what I'm asking, I'm so disappointed... but I sure hope TJ was made aware a lot sooner than we were, because I feel like there might have been some point guards he could have hit up sooner from the portal.

I've never been more ready for the top 12-20 program's in college sports to just separate from us.

I'd rather compete against K-state and the likes in a level below the blue bloods
How will this help? We’d still lose players to them if they were good enough. Plus, kiss tv goodbye.

How does it not? No one is stopping them from going and taking a professional job elsewhere if they think theyre good enough. Instead you want to ruin what has been working for everyone else for a century, something that has been paying 99% of athletes more than their individual market value and providing an education many would not otherwise receive, all so that a few rich athletes and a few rich programs can have their cake and eat it too.

And get out of here with the idea that they're "exploited". This is exactly the kind of language @Trice is talking about. Theyre being compensated extremely well, and often chose college over better paying opportunities to go pro because college offered additional benefits that they wanted. Theyre not being "exploited"

Are you telling me you didn’t enjoy watching brockerton help lead you to the sweet 16? Because I loved watching K9 lead us to an 11 win football season
They're just now realizing guys aren't wearing their lettermen jacket when going to the drive-in. It is appalling the lack of school pride.

Paying players isn't so bad. We already spend an insane amount on attracting them to campus. Imo much of the reaction is due to the fact people feel it is an increase in the competitive imbalance. If rules were in place to cap pay to an ISU friendly amount and limit transfers, I'm guessing you would not see as much of the existential meltdown of fandom. There is a valid fear that talent transfer will be more unilateral and only based on paying players.

I trust otz to recruit. But what keeps stars from ever returning to Ames after a good season in the NIL era...

Are we average forever unless Ames High starts putting out 4-5 stats every year?
I've asked the same thing. Not the Ames part, but are we talking that a 4-star isn't even recruitable in our future, or play here for more than 1 year if they show out, or heck maybe a 3-star.

I get it, my take won't be popular because it's a very emotional topic for a lot of people posting here but personally I'd rather see people get paid what their worth than some org take that money. It's a business, they're employees, pay them what they're worth.

Should schools cut all scholarships for those not playing football and basketball in the P5, and all scholarships outside of the P5 entirely? Because quite frankly when we're talking about "worth" almost everyone outside of those small groups has a market value outside college sports approaching zero. Pay them what they're worth, right? That's what matters the most to you?

No, trying to act like this is the same as any other business shows you have no idea what you're talking about.

He never came back to Ames after the sweet 16

On the podcast the guys tonight made it sound like the coaches felt great about Tyrese returning until the end of last week.

Not sure what changed. But it has been a surprise for everyone.

I never will cast hate for someone trying to better their families situation. But this fanbase will show some love if you love us back

Yeah, I'm never going to sign on with the idea that they should just "shut up and dribble" or move on to get paid what they're worth.

How are those 99% not being served now?

I don't even begin to understand the argument that they're fairly compensated now, obviously some of these guys haven't been, you're watching that get proven over and over.

Who was it working for? If their worth that much they should get paid, they shouldn't have to go anywhere. If you were worth that much to your employer you wouldn't settle for a fraction of it either, no one should.

Their "employer" is giving them a scholarship and not paying the extra worth you're referring to...

And is the extra money really equivalent to what they're worth? Like people have said this is essentially unrestricted free agency now and "teams" (or their fans) are going to overpay because they can.

Look what Jacksonville did by giving Christian Kirk a 4 year $72M deal. A mediocre WR got a deal that is way more than he was worth because Jacksonville had the money to spend. And that deal caused the WR deals that came after to jump up significantly.

This is supposed to be amateur athletics and not professional...and having bidding wars for players is not amateur athletics.

Yeah, I'm lost , I have no idea what you're on about here. If colleges want to hand out scholarships for non revenue generating sports why would anyone want to stop that?

Major conference football and basketball is a business, period. I'm surprised that's a controversial take.

Look at what has occurred in less than a year of NIL- these players have market value that has been suppressed by draconian regulations to preserve some legacy and antiquated revenue monopoly.

Why have the amateur designation at all? These players are employees that happen to be students. Sounds like that will be the ruling.

With the money these programs are bringing in, it silly to think a place like Iowa State can't compete because of paying players. Can we lease the MBB program to a donor? They fund the pay-to-play and operating costs, rent Hilton etc, but get made whole plus some TVM from the revenue? If ISU MBB and FB were businesses, I'd be looking to buy. They're money makers even despite years of neglect and low investment now.

I am not generally in the "pay people in exposure" camp but outside the sure fire LeBron type nba prospects I think it's really hard to put a value on getting 30 games on national t.v. every year and getting 1-4 years of high quality coaching and playing against a high level of competition. Georges niang isn't an NBA player if he is forced to find a professional experience right after high school to play basketball. Abdel doesn't get a cup of coffee in the league... etc. I think it's a lot more symbiotic than schools just cashing checks off 3 and 4 star recruits.

It is a non-profit business,. Because it provides opportunities to many who otherwise would not get them. The 99% of athletes who are below the market value of the compensation they are receiving.

To try to compare that to other businesses as you are doing is not an apples to apples comparison.

And yes many institutions and conferences have lost their way in this and nil is not the only way in which this is happening. Realignment would be another example.
