Seriously, where did you expect the media to rank us? We went 8-1 in conference last year, were 1 play away from winning the CCG, and crushed our opponent in one of the 4 most prestigious bowl games.

Name me another team that had this much firepower returning from a BCS Bowl win then was this bad the next year. The only one I can think of is Iowa after their Orange Bowl and that was over a decade ago.

Agree, I can't fault the preseason ranking. MAYBE #7 was a few spots too high, AND I was never convinced CFP was going to happen without some stars aligning -- but given 2020 results & number of returning players, anything much lower and we would have been freaking out about "disrespect" in the preseason ranking.

The fact we've under-performed significantly doesn't negate what was realistic guess at the time.

I think some context in last season's situation with Covid needs to be taken into account.

How many teams with mainly 3 star talent stick around in the Top 10?

We simply are not a very good team. We play well at times but fail miserably a lot of the time. Are we better that we used to be! It would tough not to be. We are ranked in the top twenty five as one of the worst programs in college football.

This is Matt Campbell's sixth year as head coach of us. I would think that he would be further along managing and making smart decisions during games. Against Texas Tech he played not too lose. Instead of going for touchdown on our last drive he settled for a field goal. The team never seems prepared during the first of half of game. Preparness is the responsibility of the coaches They fail miserably in this area.

Based on the number of players we lose after this season I predict that next year we will be horrible and it will bring back memories on how really bad we were.

I just shake my head when I read posts like this. Campbell is probably the most sought after college coach in the country. His name is on the short list of every college that's exploring a new hire, but you have determined he's failed in a number of areas. You must be smarter than all the experts across the country who do this for a living.

What bowl is the most likely if we win out? Camping world, cheez it?

We need two Big 12 teams in the NY6 or for OSU to make the playoff. That moves everyone up a bow. If OU and OSU get to a NY6. That puts Baylor in the Alamo and opens up Orlando to be a likely 7-5 ISU versus a 8-4 KState.

Two Big 12 into the NY6 and winning TCU gets us into the the Texas bowl at worst.

Winning out and Baylor losing every remaining game (@ksu and home tech). That's a path to the Alamo bowl.. maybe

This would be my inclination as well. We all want to treat 2020 like it was representative but I'm not sure that's true. We were 5-4 in 2019 and 8-1 in 2020 (in conference). For 2021 I would've split that and said we lose 2 or 3 in the conference. We might still hit that or that might even be a little optimistic.

CMC's records at ISU are:
3-9
8-5
8-5
7-6
9-3

Before 2020 we had clearly settled in at 7-8 wins. I don't think 2020 was ISU suddenly becoming a top 10 team that would hit 9 wins every season. I think we took advantage of some good circumstances... and good for us! But now we're settling back to where we were, 7-8 wins (and "settling" there is fantastic in the context of ISU football).

It is possible to be furiously angry about the failures of your sports team, and still keep that compartmentalized and proportionally insignificant to your broader life.
I wasn’t even angry. Just disappointed for a couple of minutes. Then I kept doing my hair and getting ready to go over to my bf’s place to watch his game.

It’s just a single football game out of a single season, and one where any chances of living up to preseason hype should have been gone from any reasonable fan’s expectations after watching the UNI game.

For some context, here’s Hayden Fry’s career iowa record. Based on a 13 game schedule he would have averaged around 8-5 per year. What Campbell is doing is around that same level. Most years we are gonna go 7-5 or 8-4. The years we get the bounces we’ll go 9-3 or 10-2, the years we don’t we’ll go 6-6. With the style of play we have we are going to be in almost every game.

No doubt we've been a disappointment from a preseason ranking standpoint, but the award goes to Clemson (#3), with North Carolina (#10) and Florida (#13) fighting out the second spot with us.

Hayden also scheduled blue bloods in the non-conf and didn't have a watered down Big 10 to make his record look better back then.

Those were just horrible misses by the media, not teams that had a ton of talent returning like us.

Clemson lost Lawrence and Etienne, would be like us losing Hall and Purdy after last year.

North Carolina lost 2 running backs that are currently starting in the NFL right now.

Florida only had 9 starters back compared to 19 we had.

We are the biggest bust by far of these four.

I know it hurts to hear, but Iowa is usually a top 25 team and we play 9 conference games. That’s tough.

Indiana is far and away the biggest miss. I think they were like preseason #15 or so and they are probably going 0fer in conference. They just got blown out by Rutgers. LSU was top 20 and is 4-6.

Indiana was clearly the biggest miss. Most of us knew they were horribly overrated, but they have been even worse than about anyone thought.
