ISU Logos for Cornhole Boards

Any recommendations for making for making Cornhole boards? I've been wanting to for the last few years. Making the boards seems easy enough, but I'm not sure how to go about getting the logos and such on them.

You mean how to finish the boards with decals and stain/paint once it's finished? It's not difficult but the how depends on your design.

I bought mine from a poster on here many years ago. I couldn't find the name though. They did custom vinyl logos which I applied and coated over with poly. Hopefully they pop their head up!

I made my own the same way - bought some ~$10 each decals, just the "I-state". One board cardinal, one gold, made a white circle at the bottom and put the decals inside. Then many many many thin coats of poly.

Making the boards is super easy. Painting is a pain. 20 layers of poly is a nightmare!

Looking at all our logos over the years, some of my opinions.

Primary Logos
  • The 1894 Logo was actually pretty awesome.
  • The walking Cys of '65-'77 and '78-83 were great, but they should have combined the ideas a little used the feet on the early one instead of the shoes on the later. Possibly adding the pennant to his hand in a version or not.
  • The '84-'94 "orrnado" was one of the best if not the best, but they should have versions without the Iowa State and with the script Cyclonse.
  • The '95-2006 Logo, has a few issues, but it is ok. They should have never added the Blue, it should have just been black, as in the Cy logos of past years and the outlines of anything else. And it gets kind of busy with everything.
  • The Current logo is fine. I personally do not like the chiseled versions, and think the flat or outlined versions look cleaner.
Alternates

  • The shield of '65-'77 is a nice simple logo.
  • The leaning Cy of '83-94 is one of the best, I am torn by which is better because I think having the ISU on his chest identifies him from the TOE better, although I like the look of the Block I.
  • All the alternates for the '95-2006, there are really too many, It cries we couldnt decide on which one we liked so we made them all. Same issues, get rid of the blue, would make them all better. Several I like better than the main logo, including the ISU version, and the Cyclones version. All would be better with black in place of blue.
  • '07-pres the tornado Cy, is actually fine if they would replace the second cardinal shade with black, it to me just looks off with 2 shades of cardinal.
  • The other Cy head logos are just ok I guess.
  • The poop logo, I dont hate as much as I did, but it is still really bad. They have a hard time making things simple and clean since the '80s here.
Word marks

  • Most of these I like, I actually really like the script versions of the '80s-90s
  • And actually like some of the '90s-00s versions if you get rid of the blue again.
  • the current is not bad either, although I think most of the the time 2D versions are better than 3D
Ultimately I think we have had good Ideas and bad ones over the years, and some of the bad Ideas ruined the good ones. If we could get the right people to go through our history, pull out our best logos, and put together something that pulls from the best of them, or a set of logos from the best of them. Kind of like Kagavi did, for each version of logo need/used, it would be really great.

My Ideas

  • Combine the walking Cys, later version with feet instead of shoes, and current I-State logo on chest 2D version not 3D.
  • OrrNado with no words, or possibly adding our current capital word mark, or sticking with the script versions.
  • Leaning Cy add Current I-State 2D logo.
  • Tornado Cy change secondary cardinal to black.
  • Finally find a way to add in our original logo from 1894 as homage to our roots.

Yeah I love mine. Unfortunately after 10 years of use (and the last year in a hot storage unit) the poly on mine must have stuck as part of one logo pulled off. I may have to refinish them again in the future.

Mine is same. The decals have started to shrink a bit, you can see the gaps where they are vs where they were. I need to put 20 more coats of poly on it.

If i did it again i would try to find a uv resistant decal and maybe find a more uv resistant polycrylic.
