I get what you're saying, there's not really reason why Kansas can't at least be a mediocre P5 team.
Their 2007 Orange Bowl run was a lot of smoke and mirrors. Their win over Va Tech in the Orange Bowl was unquestionably a great win, but their next best win after that was against either Okie St or A&M, both of which finished at 7-6. In many was, it was pretty much Iowa's 2015 season, except KU managed to win their bowl game.
He probably needed to be there a little longer to see some results, but I don't think he would have gotten them to bowl seasons. They just need someone who will bring stability in to the program and get some kind talent to get them to 4-5 wins a season.
Given what he walked into, he probably should have gotten at least another year. But if you’re going to fire the guy, don’t crap all over him to try to avoid the buyout. Seriously, even with a new AD, the job has less than nothing going for it.
I’d do it for a 2 million/year for 5 years, though.

But Walden was trying to run the triple option when the rest of the Big12 was running the option or the Bill Snyder version.
Spread didn't hit the Big 12 until Stoops was hired around 1998.
If he's a good coach and he is, he can implement most any offense he wants. Schemes aren't that wildly different.
I would bet his style of offense was the exact reason that KU hired the guy. Army was not running the classics wishbone offense, they were doing the double slots off the tackles rear-end with a fullback lined up behind the QB. Lots of jet sweep action by one of the slots, to get the defense to shift and then coming back and optioning to the other side.
The bar for success is quite a bit lower at Kansas than OU or UT, they are not thinking national champion, they are thinking playing a bowl game and getting some wins. There is no reason Kansas cannot reach that level and that is why I was hoping they would not hire this guy.
Option football is hard to prepare for when you only have a week to prepare, unlike a month for a bowl game. It takes discipline from the defense as oppose to just running around and making plays. Over pursue and you can get burnt, that is what the offense is meant for.
Why did UT and OU go to the spread, because they saw that TT and Baylor could line up and beat them with lesser skilled players, so they both started thinking, "what can we do with our better players?" The problem was the whole league went too far down the path, which meant smaller quicker LB's and D-line to play TT and BU, and then they lined up against the Alabama's of the world and got mauled.
Saban saw the light and switched from great defense and running the ball to throwing the ball with great QB's, Miles at LSU refuse to switch and got fired at LSU because of it. Its ok for an outlier program like Kansas to try something totally different and out side the box, what other choice do they have?
The last time they hired a coach from Buffalo it didn't work out so well!
Recruit better players and play football.
Good grief, I know Kansas has been bad at football for a decade now but they aren't limited in the players they can get like Army etc... If Iowa State can have a good football team that runs traditional systems then there is no reason other than poor hires and poor recruiting that Kansas cannot do the same thing.
Sounds like the Buffalo guy is getting the job so we don't have to worry about it.

Yes there is. KU's football facilities, especially the stadium, are not good.
You are underestimating how bad of a spot your program is in.
Would that spot be corrected by hiring a better coach and recruiting better players? Yes.
