Williams & Blum Pod: How good is the ISU basketball job?

What makes the ISU MBB head coach position great?

Pollard, Campbell, Fennelly, Dresser, etc.

What other Big 12 institution offers a team like that?

The title of the podcast is "How good is the ISU basketball job".... I think that spells it out clearly about what Williams is hearing
Is it code for: “Guys this is like the time when Eustacy got canned and we couldn’t get anyone else to take our call so we got Wayne Morgan so don’t get your hopes up”

I guess gunner’s grandma might really be coaching the team next year.

The bar is set low, so as long as grandma brings cookies and orange slices for halftime, we might see an improvement.

I expect Jamie to shock the college basketball world with an unexpected hire. Stay tuned.

"Unexpected" can mean a lot of things

Not all good. After an open debate on how attractive the job actually is maybe we'll get the ol' unexpected shocker.

From personal experience the delivery of an unexpected shocker can be good or bad.

Stay tuned!

Iowa State ranking pitifully in the KenPom luck stat is pretty constant throughout the Prohm era.

That says either... Prohm really has just been that unlucky... or you could invert the stat and call it a "clutch" stat, measuring how efficiently you distribute your net points in close games to manufacture Ws.

Prohm has not been good in close games. My normal thoughts there is that winning close games is mostly luck and teams regress to the 50-50 mean in the long term, but Prohm has tried my patience there.

Say Prohm and the team finished off three of the good teams we had good shots at (or even had on the ropes, objectively, with a few of them). We would be 3-15 in the Big 12 with three good wins.

Prohm might be back under those circumstances. Pollard would be looking for excuses to keep him given our fiscal situation, and a few big wins to point to with Hunter coming in... "Coach Prohm has done a fine job under the most difficult of circumstances with COVID this year and, despite having nearly a new roster, managed to win some big games and keep many other close. The team is on the cusp of something. With the returning talent and an ace PG recruit coming in, I think it is only appropriate to give him one more year to prove it." But that won't work now.
Prohm is terrible at drawing up plays and refuses to play 2 for 1s to end the half, aka "consistently unlucky". You can count on us getting bad looks in those situations and we seem to often be on the wrong side of a nice little run going into halftime.

One of the few times I remember a end of game play working out great was Terrence Lewis dunking against Ok St in the conference tourney last year. The team was so surprised it worked they forgot to play defense and let Ok St go the length of the court for the game winning layup.

I AGREE deadeyededic that this program is by far the WORST program right now in the Conference....

I cant understand why csp could not recruit a Point Guard for two years while Drake has two point guards who can play the position and both pass to open players ...Penetrate and drive to the basket....
Probably because everyone here seems to think we need to get only five stars to play point guard. Of course that's hyperbolic but people dismiss three-star players with huge upside all the time on this site.

I remember that I just swore and shook my head.

The Big 12 is about to experience a lot of big name coaching turnover in the next 5 years:

shaka - better get to a FF in the next three years

Weber - he’s getting old at KSU

beard - jumping to something bigger

Huggins - retirement

Self - who knows why he’ll be out but that doesn’t really matter because KU can have it’s pick

This hire is big for ISU. These are obviously just my opinion of names I can see leaving using the next 5 years.

I see only a 5-10% chance beard leaves. The man has serious roots in Lubbock. Only program he’ll leave for is Texas and even then I don’t think he will.

Idk that the team was caught off guard. It was Lewis turning to the bench and flexing while OSU inbounded the ball. Might have even been his man that drove the court
