Successful coaches who would be worth contacting if ISU was will to pay $4-$5M annually:

Mark Turgeon - Maryland
Greg Gard - Wisconsin
Bobby Hurley - ASU
Thad Boyle - Colorado
Dana Altman - Oregon
Mike Young - Va Tech
Dan Hurley - UConn
Buzz Williams - A&M
Mike White - FL
Kelvin Sampson - Hou
Penny Hardaway - Mem
Willard - Seton Hall
Steele - Xavier

There might be a couple of the above who may listen for $4-5M a year. Maybe just to get more money or extension out of their current school.:)

In the end, I expect ISU next coach to be a mid-major head coach or P5 assistant.
What is CMC’s salary? I don’t think the MBB team’s coach should approach exceeding that.

So you are saying that all the comments about his grandpa coaching there, relatives there, him growing up a Cornhusker football fan, Pinnacle Bank Arena top notch, etc. were all a bunch of BS????
My point was that when he was done with the Bulls, he wanted the ISU job, not the Nebraska job. He was not looking at Nebraska as the place he really wanted to coach, it’s the one that ended up making the most sense in the end for him.

Had Steve left for Alabama, things would be different.

Where the hell you getting $4-5 million?
Also, JP does not go after Power 5 head coaches. He's strictly mid major or assistant power 5 coach, with the 1 exception being Fred.

Count me as somebody that doesn’t want Fred back. Enjoyed the heck out of his time here but renewing the vows just doesn’t feel the same as the first time.

I agree. However, considering the names that have been put forth by the masses here... I'd prefer him over the other names.

That is where I'm at now...

He is truly doing work here. He’s changed the whole dynamic of the coaching search. Getting everybody’s hopes up to bring fred home.

years from now, after Fred’s hoisted a couple of trophies, we will all look back at this time on CF and be grateful to gunners grandmother and the fulfillment of her prophecy
I will get a tattoo of her if this becomes true.

Are we really a more difficult rebuild at this point?

Assume Fred comes, that he can bring McGowens and Breidenbach with him, and he keeps the guys worth keeping from our current roster because who wouldn't want to play for Captain Dreamboat.

Heck, while I am having fun, assume he talks Hunter into staying with Iowa State.

Why wouldn't he want to, after all -- this guy made Monté Morris a thing.

So...

Hunter
Bolton
McGowens
Foster
Breidenbach
---
some 2/4 of Harris, Johnson, Jackson, and Walker depending on who is back
Hinson (swap him for Foster if you want)
Conditt

I bet Fred could win with that team immediately.

And perhaps this is what Fred sees for potential.

3 weeks from now might be an interesting time on CF.

You did not answer the question.

What makes you think that Fred wants to go back to Iowa State?
Because Fred loves Ames, Iowa State, and wanted to come back before but it didn’t work out. We’re 3 years removed now and he’s not in a great situation with Nebraska, and we’re about to fire our coach.

There is no better time than now to jump ship from Nebraska because of our next HC is successful, he’s screwed. If Fred continues losing at Nebraska, it’d be tough to bring him back.

There are people who have posted that certain donors are willing to pay Fred's $10M buyout. They have stated that money is only available from the donor if ISU hires Fred.

I realize these donors might have a relationship with Fred, but they are intelligent people. Why pay Nebraska $10M? Why not use the money instead to pay the new head coach a very competitive salary in the $4-5M range.

As I have previously posted, ISU hiring Fred and paying the huge buyout is JUST message board chatter. I agree, ISU will end up hiring a mid-major head coach or P5 assistant.

Ill say it again: That money isn’t just there for anyone. Plus who is like Matta or Beilien that is available?

Slow down Gunner, haven't you read the posts on here? A school that has 2 conference championships and one Elite 8 in the modern era (70 years) is on the same level as the rest of the blue bloods. Every coach, present or former wants a shot in Ames.

Money is no object, ISU won the Fiesta bowl.

I agree. Then we can agree that Fred Hoiberg isn't coming back. He is getting paid around $4M annually at Nebraska. So if Fred comes back, then Jamie is going to have to give CMC another raise!!

My point is why pay Nebraska a $10M buyout- it can be used on a name head coach or any number of facility improvement projects in the AD.

Again- IMO ISU will hire a mid-major HC or P5 assistant making $2-3M.

Fred could make 4 million next year bc CMC will get a raise again most likely. Especially if we make the Big 12 title or even win it next year. Also, again, we wouldn’t be paying the 10 million buyout, or at least not most of it.
