JP has all of the negotiating power with Fred and I bet he rather enjoys that.
That's the one aspect of this possibility that has intrigued me. If Fred is truly desperate to leave Nebraska and interested in a return, that puts Pollard in an ideal negotiating spot. And with other options available, he could propose a contract structure that is very favorable to ISU.

This. Fred understands that.

That’s all well and good, but he better not screw it up by trying to play hardball. That is never a good way to start a long term working relationship.

Low salary that is incentive laden and I am completely on board.

This is all an exercise in something that will never happen, but I enjoy people getting worked up.

The salary doesn't matter. The NBA buyout would matter. There's no way Jamie should offer a contract that doesn't have a huge NBA buyout. And I'd try to work in something that if Fred decided suddenly he wanted to retire before the contact was up, he'd owe Iowa State some money too. Hoiberg seems like he isn't a very content person with his life. Iowa State shouldn't pay for that.

Gosh if we could only find Johnny Orr reincarnated. That's what we need more than anything. Remember Johnny's wit about how bad the program was in the early days.

I guess I'm to the point that I really don't care who gets hired... can't be worse than what we have now as far as results.

It should be mentioned that (in my mind) Fred would be the "safest" hire JP could make relative to what our general fan base's reaction would be to it. Then the ball would be in Fred's court. IF Fred failed, JP wouldn't be really killed for it. Hire any other candidate.... he'd get roasted if they failed.

LOL, long term working relationship with Fred Hoiberg.

5 years in college basketball is a good run. If you don’t believe that, take a look at our history.

Anyway that phrase you picked out was beside the point. You don’t go pursuing a coach because you think you have leverage over him to accept a below market deal. Terrible way to start a partnership, and if that’s the reason then why the hell are you pursuing him to begin with?
