Anyone else hearing that JP has already decided Prohm is coming back?

On top of that, prior to his injury, he was saying that he only wanted to be at Iowa State for a maximum of 2 years. I think Foster is a great talent, but we aren't going to do very well with a roster full of players who want to make themselves better to improve their draft stock over trying to make the team better.

Then you will be happy if and or when he transfers then?

Today I learned that Thad Matta is only 53. If I was guessing his age, I would have put in his 60s. Whoa.

well what else is this supposed to mean.

since he stated his goal was to only be here two years there was no question he meant to improve his draft stock

Personally, I don't want to see anyone transfer out, unless they don't provide anything to the team.

Since his surgery, Foster has stated that he will be in school longer than he originally anticipated.

Did Thad Motta get his injury/health issues fixed? If not - I don’t see him coaching again.

Our athletic department took a hit this year with Covid (obviously). Pollard just gave Campbell and Co. raises of at least $3M (adding to the deficit lost by Covid) and I don’t think financially we could afford to fire Prohm, pay for his buyout (unless big time donors step up) and hire a new coach worth a hoot. So I think pollard sill chalk up this season as an anomaly (Covid aside this team was still going to suck) and he’s going to give Prohm at least one more year..if he sucks like this next year I wouldn’t be surprised if pollard cuts ties in the middle of the season. I think by giving Prohm one more year, football will bring in however many millions for the athletic department lessening the financial blow if/when pollard decides to fire Prohm.

Also, I think Jamie knows if he fires Prohm at the end of this season, we risk the chance of losing Hunter, Nunn (both who I think are absolute DOGS!), and risking losing guys transfer, like XF who could very well be coming off an injury looking for a fresh start and would be able to with a coaching change.

  • Haven't followed it closely enough to see if the math works out. But my assumption was the increase in football season ticket prices was to pay for the increases in Campbell and staff's off season salary increases.
  • An Athletic Director is crazy if incoming recruits impact his decision to fire/not fire a head coach. Let the chips fall where they may, if Hunter and Nunn can't be convinced to come to Ames by the new coach, so be it. Same goes for existing players. I hope they give the new coach a chance to re-recruit them to ISU. But if Foster, Walker, etc. want to move on- then they need to find the best situation to develop their skills.
A couple other things:
  • If ISU wins 2 games this year, how successful do you think Steve Prohm and staff will be on the recruiting trail this summer/next fall? IMO they will struggle to sign top 150 type talent. Same goes for recruiting this spring? They might be able to attract Grad Transfers- but that's about it.
  • With the new transfer policies on underclassman, this might be the best time to fire a coach. Hire a new head coach with the right assistant coaches, it shouldn't be unrealistic to turn the roster over and create a new culture in-line with the new head coaches philosophies.
I like some of our current players (and recruits) and would hope they stay at ISU, but IMO most of our existing players didn't come to play for a coach who emphasizes defense, rebounding or toughness. They can because CSP runs a 1-4 offense where players have the green light to shoot.

The extension was a fatal mistake. JP did not want CSP - Leath screwed this up. TJ should have been the coach. I don’t care anymore as the “team” is a ragtag group of playground ball
 
Not sure why everyone think Matta would be a slam dunk hire. Yes he had some good teams at tOSU but part of him stepping down was due to health issues. Go read some of the articles out there, I'm not sure what his health is like today but based on some of the things that were reported I'd have concerns with how the grind of the Big 12 would be on in him.

IMO Hornacek would be the home run hire. Thad Matta would be a great hire as well though

Haven't weighed in much on coaching change yet but maybe fans can agree that 'change' can be good and is just necessary sometimes, without it meaning you dislike or don't appreciate the good things our present coach stands for and has achieved here. I remember when McCarney was let go. I felt he had done so much to help the program and was hard working and loyal to the Cyclones. Yet, I also felt it was time for a change. Guessing JP would feel this is somewhat a same scenario. I think a change would be good for CSP too. What do Covid budget shortfalls play into it? We're all guessing or wondering if that's the deciding factor.

All I know is, after just watching Michigan vs. Ohio State, I miss good quality basketball. Those teams scored in the 80's and 90's and I STILL thought they were both playing sound defense! I suppose some would suggest that ISU can't be on that level 'consistently', that its easier to recruit to Michigan and Ohio State, and both may be somewhat true on a consistent basis. But we got that taste of multiple NCAA tournament bids, and that taste is hard to remove from your mouth. Its just a bummer for all involved, and we know not every team can be in the top 20 every year. But JP surely sees the program needs a shot in the arm. More talent and more talented depth needed. I think the reserves for Michigan and Ohio State would be starters for us. It will be an uphill battle for sure, regardless who is the coach. Roster retention is the least of my concerns. I still think CSP is a good coach, great person, etc., but 'change' is sometimes just inevitable.

Back problems was the reason he retired.

Matta previously underwent back surgery that left him without a fully-functioning right foot and back complications. He has not ruled out coaching again but told reporters that he is focused on his health and family.
