Why not both? They don’t have to be mutually exclusive.
Heading that way! Iowa State is in year 5 of a Reclamation Project. Probably a better comparison would be the 1994 season for Oregon. Hopefully, Iowa State can keep the momentum going like Oregon did from that breakthrough season, as having a GREAT program for the long haul is the goal!

Let's Go State!
Beat the Ducks!

Why not both? They don’t have to be mutually exclusive.
Yet they usually are.

Here is one of my favorite quotes by coach Campbell.

"In the coaching profession, there are two types of people. Those that are trying to be somebody and those trying to do something. I'm trying to do something. Compete for and win championships."

If you are focused on star ratings and press releases, you are trying to be somebody. If you are focused on getting better everyday and letting the results on the field speak for themself, you are trying to do something.

Texas is a perfect example of this. Loaded with tallent but they don't work hard, develop their skills or play as a team. They will always underperform until they stop trying to be somebody and start trying to do something.

Just my opinion.

My bad, I didn’t know you wanted a personal opinion. I don’t want BYU anywhere near the Pac-12 for the following reasons:
* Cultural fit. It’s important to most Oregon grads I know. T-shirt fans may not get it as much, but many would also agree.
* BYU doesn’t add a new market, just another mouth to feed and share California recruits with.
* Their fans are insufferable. 2020 has shown that. I prefer Washington and Oregon State fans. BYU’s combine the delusions of grandeur that UW has with the righteous underdog attitude of OSU.
* I preferred the Pac-10 to the 12, with a round robin like the Big 12 has now. Any expansion has to include Texas or its pointless to me.
Again, Texas isn’t going to the PAC. You can say the PAC deal was poorly negotiated and talk about population and footprint all you want. But in the end both leagues deals are up at the same time and what UT and Oklahoma are getting is way more than PAC and ACC teams are getting, and that gap is way more than “negotiating better” would’ve done.
Second, the idea that population and footprint is a major driver moving forward is totally wrong. That is still a factor, but that purely matters in the old cable/satellite model, where subscribers are dropping almost 10% year over year. The Big 12s ESPN+ deal was a tiny tip of the iceberg. When these last deals were made, over 100 million households were cable or sat subscribers. By 2024 it might be half of that. That means conferences with big population bases that don’t have fans actively willing to seek out and pay for content are going to keep getting less and less attractive.

Everybody that understands how this works knows that in the long run expanding with Maryland and Rutgers for TV markets is going to end up costing the Big 10 money per capita. The days of cashing in on subscribers that don’t really want to watch college football are waning at a fast rate.

PAC got a fairly poor deal last time, and that was when population was far more important than actual eyeballs and interest.

If you think PAC has any chance of poaching UT or Oklahoma, you have zero idea how any of this works.

But we'll have to figure out a way to have a billboard in New York saying "Brock and Breece #1 #2 in Heisman". Then we'll be on even ground with Oregon.

If you want to win a National Championship, you've got to compete for the best recruits in the nation and bring home top classes, its as simple as that. (Conference Championships, sure.)

The Ducks have the lowest aggregate recruiting ranking of all the schools to have won a CFP game and the only teams to have won it all have classes at the top.

You can say recruiting rankings don't matter, except for the fact that they obviously do otherwise you'd have given an example of a team that ends up outside the Top 50 in recruiting rankings that has won it all.

It was a great marketing campaign. We got a deal with the YES network to broadcast Oregon games out there for a while and developed a pretty large following of fans.

The YES network brought you more fans? lol

Made a good friend at the U of O who grew up and lived in NYC and decided to come out West in part because of learning more about the Ducks due to things like that silly billboard.

Sweet you gained 1 fan. No one in NYC cares about Oregon or college sports.

The CFP is a joke. It should be called the P5 invitational.

I doubt I would watch it if I could,
It's the NY Yankees Station. Point is that it gave Oregon more exposure than some other teams on a Network out of their region. Watch it, don't watch it, but it is available. Just switched to it to see what is on now, and there is Premier League Soccer. Man City vs. Newcastle United. Nice!

I know what it is and I still wouldn't watch it. This is like claiming Rutgers brings the NY market to the B10. No one gives a **** about Rutgers.
