Honestly this is just wasting alcohol. If we win I expect JM to shotgun or beer bong a couple beers while hopefully spilling much less.

That would get old real fast.

Speaking of good players - how long after Oregon started being good (after apparently a fairly long 'not real good' stretch) did it take to start getting 4* players on a frequent basis - like at least a half dozen per year?

I'm really hoping we start seeing that. We had a few false starts over the years where we thought we were clawing out of 'terrible land', but this feels different. For me the difference is now having legitimate D1 (if not P5) depth at every position. Maybe it's continuing to put some skill guys in the NFL (now with Kolar and Hall on their way there), or winning the marquis games (like beating a great brand like Oregon in a Fiesta bowl perhaps... Hmmm..)..

On when the better recruits and players start coming: A few that wouldn’t have paid attention to your coaches overtures will now that ISU had this season. But sustained recruiting success takes longer.

Recruiting has changed a lot since the late 90s and early 2000s when Oregon began their ascent. Some of this won’t be relevant for ISU. Oregon won the Fiesta Bowl and finished ranked 2nd after the 2001 season - a month later program changing 5-star recruit and now potential NFL Hall-of-Fame inductee Haloti Ngata signed. Recruiting rankings were not the big business they are now, but Ngata was as sure a thing as can be. By 2005 Oregon had landed two more five stars and the roster began drastically improving.

Oregon fans will often mention recruiting rankings, and this used to be a fan base who took pride in their coaches scouting and development. Years of being the runner up has taught us that in the long run all your culture, development, and Xs and Os are not as good as their Jimmy and Jos.

Raw talent is the most important factor, so obviously the stars a player gets in their recruiting ranking counts. But in ISU's position, a team that might max out at three 4 star players in a class, the approach obviously needs to be different. I don't know what kinds of analytics this ISU staff uses to find the players that they do, but they have shown a remarkable consistency in turning 3 star players into All-Conference team members. This is the source of program improvement since they got here. When you watch ISU go up against OU like last weekend, you can see in spots where they have obvious talent advantages in individual players, but across the board? ISU and OU play pretty even.

Who? They were running spread, but iirc it wasn't fast break offense like Oregon and it was a couple of years after 2010 that TCU, Baylor, OU tec. started the same deal.
Are you serious? Up tempo spread was well established in the conference long before that. In '09 Rhoads and Herman tried to switch us over to no-huddle just to keep up with the rest of the conference.

By '09 about the only team in the conference that wasn't using up tempo was KSU.

Their success varried with how good their athletes, especially their running backs, were and how well their defenses held up to the strain.

If you don't mind me asking...

Do you have a Phd in Geology?

Just curious...
Nope but it is offered at the U of O. We even have a Volcanology department on campus but I never found a term where I could fit a class in so I could go around acting like Spock. I ended up with a Political Science degree with an emphasis on International Political Economy or as I like to call it, a BS in BS'ing.

One of the reasons the Pac 12 has NOT expanded to include a few other schools is that the California schools are very concerned about the Graduate Academic Programs within the conference. Boise State has wanted to join but we call them a Truckers School because well, they're pretty much a Truckers School. Neither Oregon or Oregon State are heavily involved in the Medical Sciences at all and Oregon State is an Agricultural and Engineering school largely. They used to be known as Oregon Agricultural College and our fight song still reads at the end: "OAC may fight to the end, but we will win."

I would agree with this. I'm sure plenty of Oregon fans will disagree with me, and that's fine, but in my opinion winning this game is much more important for Iowa State than it is for Oregon. I get Oregon is trying to spring into next season with momentum by winning this game; it's kind of the same for us as well, but we're also trying to shed ourselves of a putrid history. For all of my adult life, I have only known Oregon to be a power. No one is surprised when they win the Pac 12 or a Rose bowl. For us, we are one of the worst programs in college football history and are reminded of it on a daily basis by Iowa fans. To say winning a NY6 bowl at Iowa State is a huge accomplishment is an understatement - we only have 4 bowl wins in our history (yes, you read that right). Campbell has shown us it is possible to win here, which I'm not sure was possible before he was hired. If we win the Fiesta bowl, this will be my mood:

Sorry for the novel. Just trying to explain how big this is for us.
No, I think most of us all understand the how and why this game is bigger for you and respect that you guys didn't back your way into this game at all.

I don't want to say as much because it would reflect poorly on our coach (and there are other obvious reasons for why we lost those games), but I do tend to think that seeing us play better vs USC than we did against Cal and OSU is because we didn't take them seriously. Under the Chip Era, we seemingly never took anyone for granted with his "Win the Day" mantra. We certainly can't do that against the Cyclones.

Some of us old-timers get flashbacks when we think about backup QBs. One of the worst I remember (not too long ago) was knocking out the Missouri QB (Brad Smith?) and assuming that would give us a better chance to win)... then here came Chase Daniel and had a 155 QB rating (looked it up) to beat us soundly. I still call it getting "Chase Danieled".

What has kept Brown from getting more time so far this season?

I wouldn't expect the ISU offense to get off to a hot start. Our average points by quarter are:
1st 4.6
2nd 11.2
3rd 8.5
4th 8.5
Mario got the Head Coach job at Oregon primarily because the players on the team all believed in him as HC (and the one good thing Taggart did was assemble a top-notch staff that didn't leave). He's been extremely loyal at times to upperclassmen and has not let younger guys play in blowouts to give them experience or benching a RB who can't hold onto the ball. Last year in a few games people wanted to see Tyler Shough do more than hand the ball off. This year, its obvious he needed to get real reps in those games.

All of that to say that Shough probably looked much better in practice early on and without an off-season to practice, Brown was behind the curve.

On field however, Brown looks like a calm Duck on top of the water and Shough looks rattled. Some have used his stats at Boston College to suggest that he's not an improvement - the argument against that is we believe we're better at every position on Offense than BC was with a better OC so he'd have better numbers for us.

According a friend of mine in the Army from Michigan, that chick has U.P. written all over her, except that she is hot and not wearing a flannel shirt!

Speaking of the Army, I just remembered I had a roommate in Korea who was from Oregon and a big Duck Fan!

Eh, I think there is a little constipation because we're trying to smoosh a month's worth of conversation into just two weeks. Normally there is a full week for the teams to congratulate and get to know each other before the stat dorks take over and spend the next couple weeks analyzing line weights, schemes, 40 times, and individual matchups. This year Oregon only played half a season (credit to the B12 for better leadership) so even the metrics to argue about aren't very reliable.

I kinda feel for the Cyclone fans. They finally check the NY6 box and then sort of miss out on the full fan pregame experience on account of the coof coof.

I love this site and have had a great time so far with ISU fans. To compare it with the Oregon timeline they are sort of where Bellotti took the Ducks to the Fiesta in 2002 against Colorado. They knock of Oregon and they really get on the map.

But I'll watch the Fiesta this year not really having a deep understanding of the opponent or having the luxury of being able to root together with the opponent's fans for or against some lesser bowl leading up to the big game.

I'm just happy that the Ducks are playing another game.

BTW, your first name isn't Rob is it?
Iowa State's first Bowl win and only 9 win season in the Modern Era was in 2000 when the Cyclones beat Pitt in the insight.com Bowl in the B.O.B. @ Phoenix - which was crammed with Cardinal and Gold Cyclone fans! So, I'm just going to try to conjure up my memories from watching that game while I watch the 2021 Fiesta Bowl!

Sounds like another 5 star culture vs 5 star players game to me.
It’s easy to get that impression when you look at Oregon from a distance. Oregon’s talented, but lost to some weaker teams. But it’s not actually reality. The culture is good here. All our talent is young. The talent we had in the JR and SR classes opted out or went pro. There are two players we signed who are top 300 recruits left in our jr and sr classes, with 2 more that transferred in. Just at a quick glance there’s around 18 top 300 recruits who are freshman. The talent on this Ducks team is really young.

We’ve got speed and you guys have experience. The teams physically are similar, but I suspect you guys have better depth. It’s not so much a culture be talent thing. Our talent is mostly too young (there’s a couple stud like Thibodeaux, Wright, Hill, Sewell, and Pittman that impact players as freshmen and sophomores).

it’ll be a tough ass game either way. Almost no chance this is a blow out unless the TO margin is 3 or more.
