Iowa State was almost founded in Marshalltown. There was a debate between which town got the Veteran’s Home and which got the college. Marshalltown “won” the coin flip and chose the Iowa Vet’s home and Ames got the college.

EDIT: I stand corrected, I was told this while working at the Vet’s home..apologies

"I think" there's one out in Vegas, too.
I believe its a chain. All I remember was my Omaha friends talking about how hilarious it was that Carter Lake, Iowa had a strip club. Then I stayed in a hotel by there a few years later.

Nevada, Iowa, is pronounced nuh-VAY-da instead of nuh-VAA-da.

Buena Vista (at least the college, maybe the county, too) is pronounced BYOO-na VIS-ta instead of BWAY-na VIS-ta (they get angry up there if you pronounce it like it's Spanish).

Madrid, Iowa, is pronounced MAD-rid instead of ma-DRID.

Fun fact: when I was an air traffic controller in Cedar Rapids some years back, a pilot checked in for VFR flight following. I asked what his destination was, and he said "Mack-uh-WEE-ta." It took me a second to figure out he meant Maquoketa.

Burlington. Still Iowa, just not so Hawkeyie, well, excluding the newspaper.
It was in iowa city according to this atricle. It did close about a year after opening as the space was too large to make sense though.

The expansion to the u.s. was thanks to an investor from burlington. Article section quoted below.

Aldi expanded to U.S. from Essen, Germany via an undisclosed investment in Benner Tea Co., a Burlington, Iowa grocer with origins in the early part of the century. That company had been first acquired in the 1960s by Charles C. Fitzmorris Jr., who himself would go on to noteworthy things.

According to Wikipedia it was Burlington. Which I had read several years ago. Wikipedia still has it as Burlington. I do remember Benner's grocery stores. Later they were known as Giant grocery stores

Brandon's Largest Frying Pan
Crystal Lake's World's Largest Bullhead
Burlington's Snake Alley is Crookedest Street
Walcott's World Largest Truck Stop
Exira's Plow in the Oak
Riverside's birthstone for Captain James T. Kirk and Star Trek Voyage Museum

Carter Lake should not be classified as Iowa. I have no interesting facts about the town, its just dumb it exists.
Its the most West city in Iowa I believe which is its claim to fame..
