Big Ten Meltdowns

If the governor's of OH or PA cancelled fall football, they would be committing political suicide. HS Football in those states is as popular as in FL and TX.
Oh for sure. And to that same point, if they were the ones making the decision to cancel football for OSU and PSU, it'd be an even worse reaction.

No, the B1G cancelled their season for a variety of reasons. Player safety being one of the reasons, but not the main reason. Liability and the players trying to gain more power is what really scared them.

I was going full overall influence since the presidents are the ones who voted.

Top for me was OSU, MICH, PSU,(dropoff a little) Wisconsin (then a good drop off to fifth) to Nebraska (I question this and I may be putting them here due to athletics) then MSU (coattails from Mich some), Illiniois and then Iowa .
How the heck do you have Illinois that high? I would put Illinois below everyone, but Maryland and Rutgers.

Like I mentioned I went overall not just athletics. Illinois academics unfortunately is way above Iowa's academics. Football has been weaker for awhile but also with two schools from that state the flag ship will have some extra push.

Yeah, for the most part, Illinois kids that can’t get in to Illinois or NW pretty much go to Iowa.

I mean I guess I’m far from an expert on the academics but for example I’d put Purdue above Illinois just in academics. They also have competent athletics. Illinois has no influence from the athletic side. Influence is going to be overwhelmingly athletics based.
If you want to rely on “academic rankings” frankly I think you are relying on BS.

What is the annual payment to the big ten school for academics versus athletics?

One other thing to remember about ranking the pull of the big ten schools......Where is their headquarters located? Big XII is in Dallas. They guys fly to meetings, they don't drive. No issues in being in Ohio or Michigan to still be fairly centered, but still is in Chicago.

It's hilarious/ridiculous to me that Warren is getting so much flack for this. It's so much messenger blaming. He didn't make this decision. He operates at the behest of the university leaders. The decision was made by them.

I guess it's Warren's job to be the figurehead and take the heat, but it just makes me laugh that fans can't/won't see that and insist that this is all his fault.

In our little corner of the world, that's why the continual ripping of Beebe and Bowlsby is pointless. The Big 12 is set up so that the commissioner doesn't have unilateral power. They could try to influence, but the university presidents hold the actual power as the "Board of Directors."

Like back when Weiberg was commish, he tried to start a Big 12 Network, but kept getting shut down by the people with voting power. So he went over to the Big Ten in a lower capacity, and guess what -- BTN became a thing immediately.

If you are throwing Iowa in as one of the big six, you are off a little. That conference is OSU, Michigan, Penn state. Wisconsin can get a little play since Alvarez has been there long enough and they have been consistent long enough. Outside of that, the rest are along for the ride. Nebraska still doesn't see itself as basically the conference whoar to get more money for their name, but they are like a 40 year old stripper who was a huge name in her early 20s. They let her dance still because people still remember the name, but nobody really cares to see their show after they see her in person.

Hey, nothing wrong with a 40 year old stripper, if they still have it. I like to imagine Nebraska as a 50 year old stripper with 15 grandkids.

Not necessarily beating on one, but that seems to be a business that ages people. Guessing that the average 40 year old walking down the street is different that a 40 y.o. shaker. I would guess its like smoking, add about 15 years to the appearance.

Is that because Northwestern runs the Big 10, or because it's Chicago?

Nobody is loving this more than me, but I'm a little scared it's going to bite us in the ass in September or October. Fingers crossed that we can get through this season. It would be a huge boon to the Big 12 and Iowa State, to say the least.

Agree, 100%. Let's hope for the best for the team and conference, and the absolute worst for the hoks and BIG.

The meltdown from baby brother is wonderful. No football for the hoks and a $100 million loss. It doesn't get any better, does it?
Yeah, maybe don’t revel in the schadenfreude quite so much, considering it might just be a matter of time before the Big 12 follows suit. COVID is doing what was completely predictable on college campuses everywhere.

Warren can be blamed for phrasing, certainly but he's limited in that as well. Like the vote, for example. Fans want the results made public. That's not Warren's call. Those university presidents have zero desire to have their votes known.

I guess it's Warren's job to be the figurehead and take the heat, but it just makes me laugh that fans can't/won't see that and insist that this is all his fault.
I think some of the flack comes from the inevitable but unfair comparison to how people think Delany would have handled this. You're saying that Warren is the figurehead. I think people would agree but would maybe say in comparison that Delany wouldn't allow himself to only be a figurehead, but rather the leader of a conference.
