Massive explosion in Beirut

looked like a bomb to me. the attack could have been what started the fire that set off the stockpiles of ammonium nitrate, or whatever was under that warehouse next to the silo (hidden arms cache for terrorists?). I'm also guessing that there weren't any fireworks involved. I have no idea really, but Trump and people within our military know a lot more about what happened than all of the twitter experts on here.

Given all the false statements he has made on so many subjects (some intentional lies, some just from stupidity or ignorance) - no, an intelligent and informed person should not believe what Trump says over any other American, on any subject. And given his track record of lack of honesty and false statements - there is no reason even to take his claim he was told that by “generals” at face value.

And a day later, it sure looks like an ammonium nitrate explosion rather than a bomb. Case in point.

I'm still appalled at Trump's reaction yesterday to this explosion. He had absolutely no idea what happened and in his press conference said it might have been a bomb. That is just beyond irresponsible.

You don't run out there and say something so inflammatory that could literally set off a war if you aren't 100% sure of it. IMO, this right here is enough reason in itself to impeach the mother f***er. This is not acceptable! Just because we're used to this dumb s**t every day does not make it okay.

Getting that much ammonium nitrate to explode is basically a bomb isn't it? Was it done on purpose? Who knows? So, we shouldn't listen to any politicians then? Ok. Sounds good to me. Still, I'm guessing the President, whoever it is, would probably know a lot more about what happened than any stupid ass reporter.

You must not have seen any of his interviews with “stupid ass” reporters.

Nothing points to the explosion being intentional, it’s just everyone trying to make it more than it is.

Are we doing politics now with the new format? If so, I need to know how to opt out again...

No. Just not that politician. And no, a fertilizer explosion from neglect is not “basically a bomb”, it’s entirely different than a bombing attack. For many reasons.

Is it politics if someone else with a large platform would be criticized for making such a public statement even if they weren't POTUS? If some random journalist on CNN or MSNBC declared it to be a bomb, they'd probably get criticized as well.

Seems more 'political' to demand that someone not be criticized simply because they are on your political team.

Hard for reasonable people not to comment on his embarrassing statement on this. you many not like it because hearing an honest assessment of it makes you uncomfortable, but it’s legitimate news directly related to the thread topic.

Bingo. His whining about this thread not being a safe space for him where he can avoid reality is more political than discussing the President’s apparently false statements about the explosion yesterday.

Turns out my cousin is in Beirut. He's okay but the building he was in was damaged. I imagine it scared the **** out of him.

Can you tell me where the western civilization ended because Trump took out the iranian terror general? Almost all major media, and all the liberal democrats said the Iranian general's life was more important than our troops and ALL said it would lead to war. Hard for reasonable people to not comment on the entire left's embarrassing statements and overt disgust for Americans soldiers lives. You may not like it because hearing an honest assessment of it makes you uncomfortable, but it's legitimate news directly related to thread topic of embarrassing statements.

It's too bad the chosen liberal leader-in-waiting Biden wasn't afraid to show his face outside of scripted events and provide HIS vision of leadership outside of calling black hosts Junkies and waxing nostalgic about Corn Pop and how they recreated the infamous knife fight scene from West Side Story in the 1950s.

With that I'm out. I'mma going to stick with medical testing threads while you guys further erode the conversation over petty politics while ignoring the burning cities, the corruption, the erosion of law and order, the further destruction of at-risk communities by socialist anarchists, and the overt fight over control for political gains.

God I "miss" the cave. Hoping to schedule a non-sedated colonoscopy just to remember how useless all that garbage was.

Now this would be an excellent example of injecting politics into a topic

Good back story that goes into detail on how this happened. Apparently they've arrested the port authorities who were really the only ones trying to bring attention to the problem. Typical government work. Are any of these officials or judges going to see repercussions? Doubtful.

And then later, more warnings, which apparently are in writing in legal documents:

“In view of the serious danger posed by keeping this shipment in the warehouses in an inappropriate climate,” Shafik Marei, the director of Lebanese customs, wrote in May 2016, “we repeat our request to demand the maritime agency to re-export the materials immediately.”

Apparently exasperated customs and dock officials even suggested Lebanese farmers could simply spread it across their fields for a good crop yield. But not even this simple solution was heeded, nor proposals to give it to the Lebanese Army.
