OT: Mommy's Alright, Daddy's Alright

I am in HR, so like the majority of the civilized world, my parents don't really know what I do, other than hire and fire........which isn't entirely true either, as I have been doing this for ~20 years and I haven't fired anyone yet. Am I involved, yes. Do I sit in on the meetings, absolutely, but I am not the one pulling the trigger. Such a small part of the greater picture (leadership development, team building, employee engagement / relations, business partner, performance management, training, etc.).

My mom gets to see the result of what I help to produce, but probably has only a general grasp of what I "do do" in the process

(I assume a majority of jobs are like that, unless you're in the same general line of work as your parents were.)

Not my parents, specifically, but other relatives still think I'm a sports reporter. I was a sports reporter for a whopping 1 1/2 years and that was 30 years ago. But the last family reunion I attended about 10 years ago, they were all asking me how the sports reporting was going. Coincidentally, (or not) about 80 percent of my relatives are Iowa fans.

They do now, since both of them went to college.

They didn’t understand when I went to grad school.
My dad asked if it was like a job. I said sort of, I get paid and have health coverage. He retired as an electrician, so I described it like an advanced apprenticeship.
My mom, who was a nurse, understood that I studied biochemistry, but didn’t really grasp my research.

I'm in investments. I just tell people I work in real estate investing to keep it simple. My parents have no idea what I actually invest in. Nor do they really care

I run into a similar-ish issue with my FIL. I'm a civil engineer. Yet, he's always asking me to troubleshoot his computer/phone problems. He thinks since I'm an engineer, I know all about computers and tech. I always tell him "I just use them, just like you." Yes, I can use trial and error to solve 80% of his problems, but he does get frustrated when I tinker with things for 30 minutes and then say "I don't know, you should take it in to the professionals."

Quite honestly, the marine is the only one I could NOT give a job description for right now. He just changed duty stations.

In a general sense yes, but 90% of my colleagues don't understand what a reliability engineer does either. And honestly like 70% of reliability engineers do asset management related to plant operations, whereas I work upstream on the product development side. Every time I get a call from a headhunter it's for some kind of plant maintenance position... My parents know I work with heavy duty trucks to make them break down less often, and that I use a lot of math to do it. I'm fortunate to be able to essentially manage myself. My direct manager has only given me real assignments maybe 10 times over the past 5 years. Most is self-directed based on needs. So what I do day-to-day changes a lot.

When I first saw the thread title, all I could think was someone explaining to their kids that "mommy and daddy weren't fighting, just wrestling on the bed. We're both alright and nobody got hurt."
