I think they were trying to help establish his character and credibility, that he's not just a former strip club owner turned informant, but that he's a human being facing anxiety through evolving circumstances. That he struggles to maintain his sanity given those he's around and the situation he's in and yet he attempts to do so where possible. He perseveres through hobbies and that he could easily identify with any of us..

Or they just had a few extra thousand lying around in the budget for a slow-mo camera rental.
