Yes, you need 4 year guys to be good at Iowa State but it wasn’t going to happen with Grill. Everyone wanted him to be a Thomas/Morris/Naz/Niang level 4 year guy and he just doesn’t have the ceiling those guys did. At best, Caleb would have been a 5/7PPG guy while coming off the bench.

That's what people said about Thomas who was at best an equal athlete to Grill. Grill had as high of a ceiling and was starting to make progress by the end of the year. Writing off guys like Grill after a freshman year where he had no support isn't the route to take, especially when he was one of the only guys who looked like he wanted to compete.

Also, Niang and Morris don't belong in the same bucket as those other three. It's not even close to the same.

This is what happens after a 20 Loss season when the coach lost the lockeroom after the FlaAM game.....What player in their right mind would want to come back after a 20 Loss Season.....Our mbb program is the proverbial Transfer City right now...SAD but TRUE...and remember GO Cyclones!

It's crazy to think that people talk about Prohm being a great recruiter, the LW's/THT/Tyrese's are nice but when you look at the numbers, more kids leave w/o ever being a contributor than stick around. Pretty sure it's the 9th HS recruit he's had that's left before their jr year, Lard would be the only of those guys that was a major contributor. Only 5 or 6 have been big 12 quality players. TL is the one outlier, I'm not sure what category you put him. He's really struggled with the idea of building a program, which, since he'd literally never done before, shouldn't be a shock. The high number of transfers speaks to incredibly weak culture we have within the program now. Sad how fast it crumbled.

Grill did not have the same ceiling as Thomas lol. Thomas was a top 100 recruit with an offer from Virginia. He was one of the best shooters over seas and now is one of the best shooters (percentage wise) in the NBA. I wish Grill would've stayed but the dude struggled in a ton of ways this year and wouldn't have seen the floor on a capable team. Matt Thomas saw the floor a ton his freshman year on arguably one of the most talented teams top to bottom in ISU history.

Matt Thomas was an elite shooter, a highly ranked guy and didn’t look uncomfortable dribbling the ball. If Grill transfers to another high major and averages 9+ points, I’ll send you a $20 gift card to whatever restaurant you want. I just don’t see it happening.

Caleb Grill was a shooting a quard who didn't look confident enough to dribble the damn ball. Im more concerned with the fact Prohm recruited Grill, Leech and Anderson in the first place. Not the fact that they left. Prohm needs an enormous spring in the worst way. Needs two immediate impact guards or else the writing could be on the wall.

I agree re the writing could be on the wall...Prohm's Seat just keeps getting hotter and HOTTER.

Grill was our best defender this year and was a true freshman - big loss in my opinion!!

Between this and all the Chicago Bear moves this is taking my mind off no NCAA tourney. At least a little.

I think people are surprised because Grill looked to be bought in. Maybe he was and he's leaving because of a different reason. We'll likely never know. Regardless though this doesn't look good on Prohm. Nothing about this season has.

Maybe he realized this coaching staff can't teach fundamentals. Maybe he wants a better shooting coach. Maybe the same could be said about Horton-Tucker leaving. And Wigginton. HT went from potential 1st round pick to middle 2nd round. Wigginton went from potential 1st round to not drafted. We'll see where Haliburton ends up. Still expect him to be 1st round. But I'm not seeing Prohm and this coaching staff as some great developer of players.
