Thad Matta - ISU Head Coach next year

I believe they won a game too.
He's confused with the year after they lost their entire team of Hield, Cousins, and Woodard. They went 11-20 that year. The next year with Trae Young they honestly shouldn't have made the tournament. They were 18-14. Had they not had a lottery pick on their team I don't think they would've gotten in. Oklahoma State had 19 wins that year and had beaten OU two times, including the first round of the Big 12 Tournament, but OU got in ahead of them.

16-17 was the best coaching job of his career. That team was playing as well as anyone in the country.
100% agree. Prohm's not a terrible coach, but he's not a great one either. He's got next year to figure it out or else it'll get ugly. Hopefully he can.

No doubt, and not only that, the timing of such negativity is potentially destructive to the future health of our program.

In all seriousness, if threads like this are actually detrimental to recruiting then why doesn’t the staff close them. Clearly Thad Matta isn’t a coaching option and the thread was opened in jest. Just close it if it is actually causing damage to the brand.

Has less to do with them having a lottery pick on the team and more to do with switching from the RPI system to NET. It’s made it a lot easier for major conference opponents to make the tournament now and makes it a little more inexcusable when we don’t. OU didn’t have Trae Young last year and they still made it in with a 7-11 conference record again.

He definitely hasn't sucked but it could be argued he's underachieved the last 4 years. His first year could have been better but they had a pretty good regular season and the big 12 was a good as its ever been that year. I think they finished tied for 3rd with OU, who went to the final 4. Nothing wrong with the Sweet 16 obviously but in that game, Bennett coached cirlces around him, he never adjusted to Brogdan guarding Monte instead of Georges as he (and everyone but Bennett) had talked about the week leading up to the game, that completely shut our offense down. Even with that said, one of the better seasons we've had at ISU. Painter did the same in his second season, it took Prohm a half to realize that Swanigan couldn't guard Burton, by then we were in too big a hole to crawl out of. Essentially even when he has a good regular season/conference tourney, he gets outcoached when it mattered in March.

5:12 into the game we were down 14. We lost by 13. I'd say he made an adjustment and we played even with them the rest of the way. We werent able to overcome the hole but to say he didnt make an adjustment is a flat out lie.

Your hate for the man is clouding any objectivity you had and you are resorting to twisting the truth to make your points. Not a good look man.

Yeah the RPI was not good. I was still baffled OU got in that year ahead of Oklahoma State.

He is the 8th best tactician in the league. In a normal league he would be 4th or 5th. I don’t think he can do it personally based upon the data points of close game win pct, etc. But I also know that him returning Iowa State to where we were under CFH is the easiest path forward.
Dunbar will be solid as will Foster. We need Blackwell to get here and we need two transfers (one which needs to be immediate and All-Big 12). Just sucks so bad watching you team get mauled. Go Cyclones!

That Virginia team was loaded with talent and was deep. Shayok was on their bench lol. And Tony Bennett out coaching someone isn't a shocker to many, especially against a team that although had talent, had an inept bench and really only played 6 guys.

As I said before, almost everything went wrong for Iowa State this past year. I'm hoping we'll get a little bit of good luck on our side with guys improving, 2 or 3 of our 2020 class contributing, and landing a high impact transfer. We'll have to see what happens.

These threads don't mean s***. Lol

No recruit is going to think Thad Matta is coming here.

I think you meant to say Gene Hackman.

I hope you're right. I acutally hope that doesn't happen and we have a better year next season but if this happens, I hope he's gone, just not optimistic Pollard will pull the trigger. He doesn't have a great track record with this kind of stuff. He usually lets it hit rock bottom.
I'd rather hang on to a coach a year too long than fire them too early. Firing coaches early makes it hard to hire someone else. I think Pollard's willingness to hang on to Rhoads helped us get, and keep Campell. He knows he likely wont be fired if they have 1-2 down years like he would somewhere else. Coaches are starting to care more about job security rather than an immediate pay day than they used to. Especially since so many schools can offer them big money now.

I don't like the idea of firing a coach one year removed from a good season (Iowa State hasn't had many teams win the Big 12 tournament and earn a 6 seed or higher in the NCAA tourny). If we are just as bad or worse next year, I think I'd be fine with a change.

Fans wouldn't be irrational to say that we would like change if next year turns out to be bad. Some of our fans have been irrational about Prohm though. There was literally a thread started after we lost against Ohio State last year saying it was "time to move on" lol.

AND, right at the end of the regular season, Monte got body-checked "big time" by KU's (Frank Mason) resulting in a pre-NCAA tourney injury that severely limited his effectiveness in the tourney. Had ManMan been completely healthy, that game would likely have gone right down to the wire, imho.

Yeah Monte didn't play that well that game. He went 5-12 (0-3 from the 3). Abdul and Jameel were basically non-existent as well.

I'm not going to blame Prohm for not being able to beat a 1 seed, especially when that 1 seed is the most fundamentally solid team in all of college basketball and doesn't play up-tempo.

There is a group of fans that have dislike Prohm from the minute he was hired because they thought we deserved a "name" hire, or just want Hoiberg back. As they say, you never want to be the guy that follows a legend.
