On That Note: Who's on the Guest List?

Heard this one driving back from Ames this afternoon and it fit this thread. Had to look up the soul and gospel singer that did the female vocal for this, knew the story but couldn't remember the name. Merry Clayton, and she just just kills it. Supposedly it was a late thought "Hey, lets have a female vocal some of this" and they called her in to a middle of the night session.

One of the damn kings. Bruce, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Bonny Rait, KD Lang, Jackson Browne and others for the show. A real treat. Roy Orbison can stand still in those shades and a suit and make so much happen. I just don't get it.

Both NSFW:

"Favorite Song" - Chance with Gambino:

"Girls" - Joey Purp w/Chance:

Favorite Song may be one of my favorite songs I don't regularly listen to but whenever I hear it, it's as if its the first time I found it.

Just got Acid Rap on Vinyl and have listened to it 4 times through already.

Another one I'd included that has Chance on it, but as the guest feature:

Every time I hear it, I'm instantly reminded just how clever both of them are. I need to add Acid Rap to my vinyl wish list - I've got some Kendrick and Beasties on there, but I don't traditionally think about vinyl for rap/hip-hop, for some reason?

Man, I want to hate Kanye as an artist because he's nuts, but he's so good.

From Wikipedia:

'Til Tuesday frontwoman Aimee Mann briefly sings in each chorus of the song, marking Rush's first collaboration with another vocalist, with Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson adding that the band thought a female singer "would suit the song". Initially, the band had hoped to recruit Cyndi Lauper to sing the part, then later approached the Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde because, according to Lifeson, "we thought she'd be perfect. But Chrissie was unavailable at the time..." Rush later recruited Mann and paid her $2,000 to sing on the track, with Lifeson saying that "her voice blends with Geddy [Lee]'s perfectly and I think it creates the right atmosphere for the song. It's just something new for Rush..."

An FYI for everyone following, I think this is the song that helped inspire your idea for this week's theme.

Dang it, Cydar. Stole mine.

And remember, that isn't special effects, Rush and Aimee Mann literally fly around like that.

Rockwell w/Michael Jackson on the chorus

My "Everybody shut up, this song is on" featuring Bootsy Collins & Q-Tip

Did some research and did not know Stevie Ray Vaughn was lead guitar on this.

Morgan Wallen featuring the Boyz from FGL. I don't care....I know the Hate is out there. This is realz.

Speaking of guys with sunglasses, Elvis Costello makes a guest appearance on a George Jones special from about 1981. I was really impressed when I heard this (just happened to be watching), and I didn't even know the Patsy Cline version at the time.

I remember that. I think he was very sick but still gutted it out because he so admired George Jones.

Elton John contributed backing vocals and piano on this Lennon single

When I hear this song I remember reading about Lennon's bet w/ Elton, but couldn't recall full details. So I went to Wikipedia for summary. This song has even more notable stuff surrounding it.

Via Wikipedia (subject to verification).
  • This was Lennon's only solo No. 1 single in the U.S. during his lifetime.
  • Lennon was the last member of the Beatles to have a solo No. 1 in the U.S.
  • While in the studio recording this track, John bet Lennon the song would top the chart. Lennon was skeptical, and made a promise if it did go to No. 1, he would perform live with John. When it did, Lennon appeared at John's Thanksgiving performance at Madison Square Garden in November '74. It was Lennon's last major concert appearance.

This counts more as a duet than guest appearance, but I’m including it because I love how the voices blend, and it was a good balance to the heaviness of the album as a whole.

Steve Earle: “I Remember You.” Guest: Emmylou Harris

Also guesting/dueting on the same LP: Sheryl Crow on "Go Amanda," which she co-wrote with Earle; and Siobhan Kennedy (River City People) on “Conspiracy Theory.”

Every record Stevie Wonder did in the 70's was a gem, including this one that has a guest appearance by Jeff Beck.

As I understand it, Derek and the Dominos (Eric Clapton, Bobby Whitlock, Carl Radle, and Jim Gordon) had already started recording the album Layla in Miami in 1970, when the Allman Bros. did a show there (where Eric Clapton was in the audience). Duane Allman was invited to join the session (probably that same night) and the rest is history. On the original double album, the 1st side doesn't include Allman but he is on the other three sides, including on this classic song, where he is clearly prominent.

Derek and the Dominos were also guests themselves, having appeared on George Harrison's All Things Must Pass (probably recorded earlier that year).
