Football Season Postmortem

Phil Steele looked at all the returning starts and hyped them for a Big XII dark horse because of that. This line had moments, but they were way too inconsistent. False starts all year at the worst possible moments. Offense was good this year but couldn't get out of its own way too many times.

ISU was so close to making this a reality. The special teams and OL just did not hold up their end. Defense, for some reason, just was not there on 3rd downs for a lot of the year. Guess this is just the growing pains for the team.

7 wins seems like a bit disappointing, considering all the hype going into the season. Really good returning quarterback, highly experienced offensive line filled with seniors, and one of the best defenses in Iowa State history.

We had 8 close games this season (10 pts or less, not counting TT since that was a late TD by tech to make that a 10 pt game... never really close in 4th qtr). We went 3-5 with two of the wins coming against UNI and Kansas... we should have only had 6 close games and should have been at least 3-3... but there is a reason for the losses.. "you are what your record says you are".

In 2018: 7 close games plus bowl game (4-3, 4-4 with WSU)
In 2017: 8 close games plus bowl game (3-5, 4-5 with Memphis)

Difference between ISU and teams like Minnesota, Baylor this year was the ability to:

1) Be more physical then their opponents, win the line of scrimmage more consistently
2) Make plays in key moments (see end of half scores given up vs. iowa, tex, see 3rd and "forever" conversions leading to pts, see turnovers in 4th qtr vs. OSU, see completely inept offense for multiple qtrs vs. KSU, Bay, UNI, see inability to move the ball into scoring range after crossing the 50, see an absurd number of presnap penalties and inability to over come them)

For ISU to take the next step we will need much improvement on the o-line (nothing new here) and more play making from the defense. ISU rarely came up with TO's or big plays on Defense... they didn't get consistent pressure, sacks, TO's (it was good to see some TO's vs. KSU, but inability to stop the run, control line of scrimmage was embarrassing). I hope Will McDonald (1 yr more experience) + Bailey coming back can help with the sacks/pressure which is usually the key to forcing more TO's. But... concerned about interior DL... STRUGGLED vs. the run against OSU, OU, KU, KSU. without Lima, Johnson, that task could be more difficult. Defense is "fine", but they were supposed to be strength of this team. We needed them to do more than "their share"... They needed to make plays not just force punts. Hopefully, an improved o-line (not counting on it, but i am hoping) will take some pressure off the Def in 2020.

We will see.

Has it been proven he is not? Might stick your foot in your mouth. He has measurables for it. We will both see in the coming months.

Now put up or shut up with your ISU degree....unless you are under 18 which is highly likely.

Lol exactly

Not sure having an Iowa State diploma really shows you aren't a fan of another school. I can think of several people that graduated around the same time as me that were Iowa fans.

I don’t believe you have a degree from ISU. Even you do, that doesn’t mean you’re an ISU fan. Have you ever posted anything positive or nice about ISU? The answer is never.

SP+ says that this is the best Big 12 of the last few years. TCU finished 5-7 and was still 38th.

A great example of "**** happens" is TCU and KSU. KSU is 46th in SP+, and finished 8-4. ISU finished 23rd. The record is what it is--it's what you play the game for--but if we replayed this season 100 times I think we do better than 7-5 on average.

Agree... BUT, if we played it 100 times we would fail to recover the fumble vs. UNI some times, miss the FG vs. Tex, even lose to KU a couple times. So, there would be some 5-7, 6-6 years in there too. On average I would say we would be around 8.

But, we will never know. Bottom line, there is a reason you lose the majority of your close games and barely win 2 games vs. teams you should beat easily (KU, UNI this year, KSU, Drake last year). The team has talent but has not been able to put it all together consistently. I think it is primarily due to the fact that they have not controlled the line of scrimmage on Offense or created game changing plays on Defense (TO's, Sacks, consistent pressure).

JHC you guys are dumb. I post positive stuff all the friggin time. Go read the Michigan b-ball thread. Go read the Lazard NFL thread.
I’m obviously not an ISU fan....I mean I’m only one of the first posters on this board when it was created, graduated from ISU, purchased a AHF shirt specifically to bug Iowa fans, have ISU vanity plates, have ISU memorabilia on my walls, am a 25 year season ticket holder at the Captains level, have parents that are alums, have a cyclone grill cover, went to Johnny Orr b-ball camps, made bowl trips, am sending my daughter to ISU, have a collection of game programs, have a Cyclones.TV account, etc etc etc.
I guess I do all that because I just hate the Cyclones. Man...you got me guys. You got me good.
Bunch of friggin dorks.

Guess I spent money to frame this because of my disdain for ISU.
